Where to go and how to get there — whether you're participating in the parade or just trying to avoid the crowds — this Sunday.
The Celebrate Birmingham Hometown Parade will take over downtown for a few hours this Sunday, which may make parking, or just getting around town a little tougher, whether you're participating or not. Where to park: Street parking will not be available along the parade route, which is nearly identical to last year, except it launches from Daines Street and Old Woodward Avenue. The parade then travels north on Old Woodward, turns west on Maple and south on Bates Street before concluding in Shain Park. The closest city parking garages to the parade route are the Pierce Street Parking Garage and the Peabody Street Parking Garage. Plan for Pierce Street Reconstruction The Pierce Street construction project, approved in late 2012, is well …

After launching in Birmingham in mid-August, Parkmobile, a way to pay for your parking meter using your smartphone, celebrated its official ribbon cutting Thursday.
Parking can be a challenge in downtown Birmingham but it doesn't have to be — that's, at least, the sentiment of those behind Parkmobile, the smartphone-friendly way to pay for your parking. The company, which launched in Birmingham in mid-August, celebrated its official ribbon-cutting in front of City Hall Thursday morning. "It's exciting to partner with a forward thinking city like Birmingham," said Michael Sanocki, vice president of operations for Parkmobile. The company launched in Europe in 1999 and now serves more than 300 cities across the country. Birmingham was the sixth city in Michigan to join Parkmobile, alongside Ferndale, Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Petoskey and South Haven. Sanocki said the company is currently in negotiations …

After the Gateway Montessori School at Birmingham's First Baptist Church complained there weren't enough parking for parents, the city commission imposed a 30-minute time limit on seven spots.
If you regularly park in the lot next to the North Old Woodward Parking Garage, you'll need to watch which spot you pick. On Monday night, the City Commission approved imposing a 30-minute time limit on seven parking spaces along the south side of Parking Lot No. 5. The time limit would only be in effect between 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and be adjacent to the rear entrance to the First Baptist Church. The issue was brought before the commission after administrators at the Gateway Montessori School, located inside the church, complained that there was a lack of parking available near the preschool during pick-up and drop-off time. Currently, entrance to the parking lot is controlled by a mechanized gate and in general, Assistant City Engineer Paul …

In addition, drivers who register with and use Parkmobile between Tuesday and Dec. 15, 2012 will be entered in a drawing to win free metered parking for 2013.
Parkmobile lands in Birmingham on Tuesday, and Birmingham shoppers and diners now have more options when it comes to paying the meter. The Birmingham City Commission agreed to sign a contract with Parkmobile USA in early July, giving Birmingham drivers the option to pay for their parking meters either by calling a phone number or by using their smartphone. "Parkmobile is very excited to launch our mobile payment parking service in Birmingham," Parkmobile's CEO Albert Bogaard said in a recent statement. "With this technology, customers no longer have to search for change at their destination. Our mobile payment service is an example of another technology that can make our lives easier and more efficient." How does Parkmobile work? …

The Birmingham City Commission agreed to sign a contract with Parkmobile Monday night, which lets drivers pay for parking meters straight from their smartphone.
Those tired of paying Birmingham's parking meters with quarters will soon have another option, after the Birmingham City Commission agreed to sign a contract with Parkmobile USA Monday night. Under the Parkmobile system, users can pay for a Birmingham parking meter by either calling a phone number or by using their smartphone. "It's really cool," Police Chief Don Studt said. "I can even use it." How does Parkmobile work? According to Studt, each transaction will cost the user an additional 35 cents. The system will be implemented at no cost to the city except for $200 a month in enforcement fees. However, Studt said the city should recoup those costs easily. Currently, cash from the city's parking meters are collected — and then deposited …

Ending parking service early for the Birmingham hotspots comes on the heels of a shooting outside South 2 weeks ago. Some believe the move might endanger guests walking to their cars late at night.
The Birmingham Police Department said it would be stepping up public safety measures following a shooting outside South Bar on April 2, and now downtown bar owners are feeling the impact. The owners of South, the Hamilton Room and Chen Chow Brasserie received notice Thursday that valet service must shut down at midnight beginning this weekend, two hours earlier than the bars' 2 a.m. closing times. The move follows an April 2 shooting outside South Bar, in which a 29-year-old Redford woman allegedly fired a handgun into the air during a fight after closing time. After the shooting, Birmingham Police Chief Don Studt said police would be increasing enforcement downtown, noting, "This type of dangerous behavior is unacceptable by any standard …
