Protesters 'Occupy Birmingham' With Signs, Slogans, Grievances

More than 50 people from Birmingham and surrounding cities show up at Martha Baldwin Park on Saturday afternoon to protest income inequality, a corrupt federal government and more.

“I’m here because I think Martha Baldwin would expect me to be here.” There were dozens of reasons why more than 50 protesters came out to Martha Baldwin Park to participate in Occupy Birmingham, but for longtime Birmingham resident and park trustee Elaine Moore, she was there because of the legacy of one of Birmingham’s original activists. “She was active in almost everything in this town to improve civic life,” Moore said of the woman who helped found the Baldwin Public Library and whose name graces the park where the protest — an offshoot of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement — took place Saturday afternoon. “Martha lives in this event.” From improving civic discourse to speaking out against income equality and campaign finance laws…

Really, Connie and 'Trees'? A peaceful, respectful demonstration of views about improving civic discourse, "corporate greed," insider trading, campaign finance and other public policy strikes you as a waste of time or hypocrisy because they may have nice homes? . . . Occupy Birmingham Organizer Calls Protest a 'Political Science Experiment'

The demonstration is set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Martha Baldwin Park.

The Occupy movement is coming to Birmingham this weekend, with Occupy Birmingham scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Saturday in Martha Baldwin Park. The event has been organized by Gerald Doelle, a longtime Birmingham resident and retired director of the American Heart Association of Michigan. The protest is part of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement, an uprising against social and economic inequality and corporate greed that began Sept. 17 in New York and has since spread to cities across …

Nuh-uh, Mike. This is so far under the radar, the only ones likely to be affected are squirrels at Baldwin Park -- not that they'll have much company, I expect. The Facebook page has nine fans and just one 'Like' click on a post. 'Nuf said.   more ›

Occupy Movement Comes to Birmingham Dec. 17

Organizer Gerald Doelle said he hopes the nonpartisan Occupy Birmingham protest is a respectful event.

The Occupy movement comes to Birmingham this month, as resident Gerald Doelle is organizing an Occupy Birmingham protest for Dec. 17 at Martha Baldwin Park. According to Doelle, the goal of the protest is to "make visible our dissatisfaction with a dysfunctional Congress, a political system corrupted by money and a failure of responsibility and leadership on Wall Street and in the U.S. banking sector." The protest is part of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement, an uprising against corporate greed which began Sept. 17 in New York and has since spread to cities across the country, including Detroit on Oct. 21 and nearby Ferndale on Oct. 28. Doelle said he hopes the movement will gain grassroots support. He has launched the Occupy …
