Funeral for Slain Birmingham Teacher Harry Berkowitz Monday

West Maple Elementary School will let out early today so former colleagues of the longtime teacher can attend.

  Former West Maple Elementary School teacher Harry Berkowitz will be laid to rest Monday during an afternoon service followed by burial in Birmingham. Friends, family and former coworkers will gather at 3 p.m. for a memorial at Hebrew Memorial Chapel in Oak Park. Rabbi Steven Rubenstein will officiate. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Park Cemetery in Birmingham. Police said Berkowitz, 72, was murdered at his home on Charles Lane in Franklin last Tuesday by roommate Thomas Ian Matthews. The 33-year-old ended his own life during a standoff with police in a Royal Oak home later that day. Visitation Sunday for Late Birmingham Police Officer Philip Lai

The six-year veteran of the force passed away Wednesday from spindle cell sarcoma.

Members of the Birmingham Police Department are mourning this weekend after one of their own passed away after a long battle with cancer. Philip "Phil" Lai, 42, passed away Wednesday after a long battle with spindle cell sarcoma. Lai was a six-year veteran of the Birmingham Police Department. Lai, a Macomb Township resident, is survived by his two daughters, Veronica Rose and Katherine Rose, as well as his mother, Patricia Ballard, his sister Christine and brother Tito. Seaholm Remembers Collin Trask With Words, Photos and Music

A funeral service for Trask will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Birmingham.

  For so many at Seaholm High School, Collin Trask was more than a classmate. For so many, Trask — who passed away Tuesday after a long battle with cancer — was an inspiration. "To know you even for a little while is a blessing and you will forever be an inspiration," Brooke Jackson tweeted on Tuesday. She was one of hundreds of students and community members who took to social media to remember Trask, a football fan once described by the Seaholm Highlander as "the toughest kid at Seaholm." Diagnosed in seventh grade, Trask suffered from a medulloblastoma, a kind of brain tumor that lodged itself in Trask's brain and spinal cord.
