Bloomfield Hills high school consolidation claims first coaching casualty as DeWald replaces Seaholm's interim head coach Jim Pobursky.
It was an offer Jim DeWald just couldn’t refuse. The Andover varsity football coach accepted the same position with Seaholm High School on Monday afternoon. “It’s been a whirlwind of a day,” DeWald said in a phone interview Monday night. The Bloomfield Hills Board of Education voted in June to merge both Andover and Lahser high schools into a new Bloomfield Hills High School for the fall of 2013. District officials are currently planning for the consolidation of students, administrators and staff, including coaches. Facing uncertainty after next season, DeWald applied for the Maples vacancy around Christmas time and interviewed in January. “I talked to my principal, my family and I just think it was the right time and the right decision,” …

Seaholm showed their true colors Friday night with a 'red out' at the Seaholm vs. Groves varsity football game.
Red colored Friday night's varsity football game at Maple Field between Seaholm High School and Groves High School. In honor of Coach Nick Deane, head football coach for Seaholm who died last spring of a heart attack, both student bodies worked together to sell T-shirts for a "red out." T-shirts were on sale at the game, with the phrase 'saving a life is a real sport' on a front and team names on the back. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales before and during the game went toward the American Heart Association. "The support for raising awareness from this community has been phenomenal," said Cindie DeWolf, youth marketing director for the American Heart Association. "This is truly a wonderful tribute to the coach." Seaholm junior Erin Brown …

Students from both high schools are selling red t-shirts to raise funds for the American Heart Association and honor late Seaholm football coach Nick Deane.
Seaholm's school colors are mauroon and white, while Groves prefers white and green. However when the Maples take on the Falcons for the annual inter-city football match-up this Friday, organizers are hoping the stands will be sea of red. Students, parents and fans are encouraged to purchase $10 red t-shirts to raise funds for the American Heart Association before and at the game — a move inspired by the loss of Seaholm's late head football coach, Nick Deane, who passed away from a heart attack in May. “He was a good man on and off the field," Seaholm senior Neal Page told the Birmingham Board of Education Tuesday night. "He was a great role model.” The decision to "red out" the Seaholm and Groves game grew from an idea by three Birmingham…

"We started something here together, something I think that can turn out to be very special," said Jim Pobursky, who will be coaching his 43rd season this fall at Seaholm.
The road to new head football coach at Seaholm High School was a winding one for Jim Pobursky. A longtime fixture on the area’s prep sidelines, Pobursky came out of retirement last December, fulfilling a promise he made to a dear friend. In the mid-2000s when they were assistant coaches together at Troy High School, Pobursky promised his buddy and fellow coach Nick Deane that if Deane ever became a head coach, he would come on board as his top assistant. So, after Deane was hired as head coach at Seaholm in December, Poburksy joined him on his staff. “I wasn’t expecting to come back, but sometimes things happen for a reason,” he said. After Deane died of a heart attack in May, Pobursky — 68 and set to enter his 43rd year coaching football…

"He was my coach from the moment I was born to the moment he passed away," said his son Joshua. At home and on the football field, Deane left a large footprint in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
More than 700 friends, family members, colleagues and football players poured into the Woodside Bible Church in Troy on Saturday to pay tribute to the memory of beloved football coach, mentor, family man and church member Nick Deane. Deane, 52, a Troy resident and the recently appointed head football coach for Seaholm High School, died of a heart attack on May 30. He left behind many loved ones, including his high school sweetheart and wife, Timari, and four children, Moriah, 10; Jordan, 16; Jared, 25; and Joshua, 29. Joshua Deane’s son Joshua was Deane’s only grandchild, and was the “twinkle in his eye.” “The quality of my dad is not something I can fully describe in words," said Joshua, who spoke at the funeral. "His shoulders were …

As Nick's wife and #1 devoted fan, I am so grateful that Seaholm has asked the man whom Nick considered to be more than just an assistant, he was like a mentor to him personally. It is all as it should be. God bless Birmingham Seaholm and in honor of Nick, 'Go Maples!' Timari Deane   more ›
