Birmingham Recognizes Its National Merit Semifinalists

Seven students from Seaholm and Groves high schools were recently named National Merit Semifinalists.

Birmingham Public Schools recently recognized its 2012-13 National Merit semifinalists from Seaholm High School and Groves High School. Seven students from Seaholm and Groves were recognized this year. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation designates students as semifinalists as part of the first steps in the National Merit Scholarship process. Semifinalist certificates are presented to one-third (16,000 students) of the approximately 50,000 high scoring students tested last fall every year in the PSAT, measuring critical reading, math and writing skills. 21 Birmingham, Beverly Hills Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Six of those students go to Seaholm and Groves and another six attend the Roeper School.

Last week, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of the 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists — 21 of which go to Birmingham and Beverly Hills-area high schools. These high school seniors now have the opportunity to compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million next spring. Around 90 percent of semifinalists attain finalist standing and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. According to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier …
