Birmingham students helped build walls with Habitat for Humanity Detroit on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
High school students from Birmingham Public Schools are the stars of a recent video spotlighting student volunteers with Habitat of Humanity. The video, posted to Youtube on Jan. 26, was taken on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Birmingham students, wearing Groves High School and Birmingham United hockey sweatshirts — as well as hard hats and work gloves — helped Habitat volunteers in Detroit build walls during the day off from school. "Thank you volunteers and family partners," writes Habitat for Humanity volunteer Keith Kol, who uploaded the video. Students across the district volunteered on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year, including Berkshire Middle School students, who delivered donated items to Gleaner and Lighthouse of Oakland …

The third Monday in January — otherwise known as Martin Luther King Jr. Day — can be a day off spent sleeping in and lounging around the house. But for millions of Americans, it's a day spent volunteering. Nowhere is that more true than in Birmingham. Though schools are officially closed, on Monday Birmingham teachers will participate in a day full of professional development — with a focus on social justice issues, differentiated instruction, and learning style differences. Meanwhile, students across the districts will be volunteering at dozens of local charities and non-profits. Will you be giving some of your time to a good cause, or did you already on Saturday — the National Day of Service declared by President Barack Obama? Show off a…

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday and in Birmingham, community groups are preparing for ways to remember, give back and reflect. Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, The Community House will host its 21st annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, a breakfast sponsored by Birmingham's Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. Themed "Lest We Forget," this year's event will feature a speech from Dr. Silas Norman, Jr. assistant professor of internal medicine and the associate dean for Admissions, Diversity and Inclusion at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
