"Times are still tough and we are thankful for their desire to help children in our community feel special," says an area coordinator for Toys for Tots.

Managed by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is a program to collect new, unwrapped toys in November and December each year. These toys are distributed as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. "We really enjoy participating as a collection center," said Christine Ramaekers, CDK and vice president of MainStreet Design Build. "Our gift givers love to share the reason behind the gifts they have …

A weekly update of what's going in Birmingham's business community.
Here's a snapshot of activity in Birmingham's business community this week: Co-owners Steve and Christine Ramaekers celebrated the 20th anniversary of MainStreet Design Build with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week. Based in downtown Birmingham, MainStreet Design Build is a full-service design and construction firm that has been creating kitchens, additions and bathrooms throughout Metro Detroit since 1991. "We started out renovating and restoring older and historic homes," Steve Ramaekers said. "When homes in our area were built, master suites and gourmet kitchens did not exist ... We recognize that today, lifestyles have changed. Most of our work is now focused on repurposing existing space or expanding the home's square footage to …

We've got your weekly update of what's going in Birmingham's business community.
Here's a snapshot of activity in Birmingham's business community this week: The Birmingham Principal Shopping District (PSD) reported that the Birmingham Bike Festival and Birmingham Cruise was a success this year, as discussed at the group's monthly board meeting Sept. 1. According to PSD Executive Director John Heiney, attendance numbers were high at both events, particularly the Cruise on Aug. 20. "The foot traffic was outstanding," he said. "As good as I've seen it in a couple of years." Heiney said the city is looking at tweaking the event slightly for next year by adding more family-oriented events, such as face-painting, to the mix. In addition, Heiney said the PSD board heard reports on summer plantings winding down, noting the "…
