Parents Share Pride in Their Warriors

Parents, family members and proud fans revel in team's accomplishments on the field.

The stands at Ford Field were full of proud parents and families cheering on their favorite Brother Rice High School Warriors during Friday’s state championship. But few could rival the smile Monica Church beamed amid the raucous crowd as the clock ran out. “This was just awesome! What a great way for him to end his senior year,” she said of her son, star running back Devin Church, who set a school record with a 244-yard, three-touchdown performance. “We’ve waited for this for a long time, and he’s been working so hard all year, so to get this done is awesome.” Motivated to play his best game on the biggest stage, Church had a lot of support, she said. A handful of family members trekked from their native Ohio for Thanksgiving and the …

Fans of all ages come from near and far to get a glimpse of championship football, courtesy of the Brother Rice Warriors.

DETROIT – Without a true home field to call their own during the season, Brother Rice football fans are used to traveling far and frequently to support the Warriors. Friday was certainly no exception, as hundreds of orange-and-black clad Brother Rice fans filled eight sections of Ford Field's lower bowl to cheer on the eventual Division 2 state champions. The Warriors gave them plenty to cheer about by taking an early lead that they never relinquished in the 24-14 victory. It was thanks largely to Devin Church, who ran for 244 yards on 33 carries, including all three of the Warriors' touchdowns. The fans showed the love, chanting "we got Church, we got Church" as the Lowell Red Arrows tried to defend the end zone near by the Warriors' …

UPDATE: Brother Rice Football Headed to State Finals at Ford Field

The Warriors narrowly escape with a 27-26 win over Detroit Martin Luther King on Saturday in the semifinals.

WEST BLOOMFIELD – As time ticked down in the second half of the Division 2 state semifinals, so did the Brother Rice High School varsity football team’s substantial lead. Devin Church said it was almost like revisiting a nightmare. In the first round against Harrison last year, the Warriors let a lead slip away late in the second half. Longtime head coach Al Fracassa reminded his players of that going into halftime with a commanding 27-7 lead over Detroit Martin Luther King on Saturday. “When we went into the locker room, coach was saying they can still come back. It’s not over,” Church said. “This is exactly what happened last year. I thought we were up and they came back in the second half. That’s exactly what happened when we came out …
