The Junior League of Birmingham will join SOAP, a nonprofit run by Birmingham native and human trafficking survivor Theresa Flores, during the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
When Theresa Flores was a teenager in Birmingham in the early 1980's, she was pretty, blond and ran on the track team during the day. And every night for two years, she was raped and tortured as part of a sex ring that Flores kept hidden from her friends, police and family. Now, Flores is joining forces with the Junior League of Birmingham this weekend to spread awareness about human trafficking ahead of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The Junior League will be working with Flores' nonprofit SOAP, or Save Our Adolecents from Prostitution. Volunteers will fan out across the city this Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to distribute bars of soap to dozens of motels and hotels — places where pimps and traffickers often take their…

Hundreds of children, many dressed in full costumes, joined the festivities Sunday.
Pac-Man, a scarecrow, Princess Leia and more were in the crowd on Sunday for the 18th annual Pumpkin Patch event, followed by the Halloween Parade in downtown Birmingham. The Junior League of Birmingham and the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce organized the Pumpkin Patch festivities, which offered children of all ages an opportunity to show off their costumes, grab some snacks and play a variety of games. Many of the activities took place on West Merrill Street, right outside The Community House. Hundreds of families walked in the Halloween Parade, which started at the corner of South Bates Street and Martin Street, and snaked through downtown before ending in Shain Park. Were you at the Pumpkin Patch or the Halloween Parade? The …

At the Junior League's Pumpkin Patch and Halloween Parade on Sunday, participants will be able to visit a "make your own cookbook" station and peruse dozens of healthful fall recipes. Here are a few.
The Junior League of Birmingham's 18th annual Pumpkin Patch happens this weekend on the terrace of The Community House, bringing Halloween early to downtown Birmingham. The day includes bounce houses, crafting, photo session and games for children, not to mention a children's parade of Halloween costumes at 4 p.m., sponsored by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce. But according to Katie Dunn, chair of this year's Pumpkin Patch for the Junior League, the real focus of the event is about healthful eating and avoiding those post-Halloween stomachaches brought on by too much candy. During the event, the Junior League will sponsor several healthful, nut-free snack stations for children and parents, as well as a "create your own …
