Former Townsend Chef Named a Semifinalist for James Beard Award

Myles Anton, currently the chef at Traverse City's Trattoria Stella, was nominated for a 2013 James Beard Award, sometimes known as the 'Oscars' of food.

Talk about good food coming from Michigan. Myles Anton, a former chef at Birmingham's Townsend Hotel and Rugby Grille, has been nominated for a 2013 James Beard Award. Referred to as the "Oscars" of the food world by the Huffington Post, the James Beard Foundation annually recognizes chefs and restaurants across the country for excellence. Semifinalists were selected from more than 44,000 online entries in 20 categories. Anton is currently the executive chef at Traverse City's Trattoria Stella but before that, he worked his way up to sous chef at the Townsend Hotel under head chef Louai Sharkas in the 1990's, according to Anton's profile on CrushMichigan.com. James Beard Celebrity Chef Tour Visits Bloomfield Hills Sunday

The Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, located on Long Lake Road, will host the annual dinner featuring the area's best culinary talent, including the new executive chef at the Townsend Hotel.

Some of the most sophisticated palates in the culinary arts will be in Bloomfield Hills Sunday for the James Beard Celebrity Chef Tour. And the chefs and staff at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, the host of the event, are up for the challenge, said Catering Director Sue Helzer. "We have never hosted an event like this and are very honored to be selected," Helzer said. "Our Chef Kevin Peasgood was nominated to participate and host this event, and we have our in-house staff as well as our banquet staffing company sending additional staff to accommodate such a high-end dinner." Forest Grill Chef Named Semifinalist for James Beard Award

The Forest Grill's David Gilbert is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2012 James Beard Foundation's award for the best chef in the Great Lakes region.

Birmingham is home to one of the best chefs in the region — Forest Grill Executive Chef David Gilbert has been named as one of 20 semifinalists for the 2012 James Beard Foundation award for the best chef in the Great Lakes region. The awards bestowed by the James Beard Foundation are some of the highest honors given for food and beverage professionals in North America. The foundation promotes culinary arts by honoring chefs, wine professionals, journalists and cookbooks across the country. The foundation also offers workshops, classes and conferences for aspiring chefs. Wine, Dine and Talk with the Area's Best Chefs During Celebrity Chef Tour

The Townsend Hotel will host a seven-course special event with the Midwest's celebrity chefs Thursday.

Jim Bologna, executive chef of the Rugby Grille at the Townsend Hotel, once aspired to be a Navy fighter pilot. When his plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy fell through, he recalled, “My mom said, 'You like food and people.’ ” And so he went from flying to flambé, enrolling in Michigan State University‘s hospitality program. “My first cooking class, I took to it like a duck to water,” he said.
