Warmer weather and melting ice have closed Birmingham's outdoor ice rink for the season.
Winter may not be over yet but March's warmer temperatures have officially closed Barnum Park's outdoor ice rink for the season. With the warmer weather (Monday's high is expected to hit 53 degrees) melting the ice, the city officially closed the ice rink on Monday. Barricades are now in place to keep skaters, hockey players and perhaps even swimmers away. In a repeat of last year, the ice rink at Barnum Park wasn't even open for two months this winter, not opening until Jan. 21. The ice rink was still under water at the beginning of January, after Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood said rink set-up was delayed due to snow over the Christmas holidays. The ice rink is typically set up in mid-December. The city maintains the …

Ice skaters are reminded to follow permitted hours for hockey games and refrain from dangerous behavior while skating.
Temperatures are finally cold enough and Birmingham's ice skaters and hockey players need not wait any longer: the Barnum Park outdoor ice rink is now open. Birmingham had a late start prepping its only outdoor ice rink. The city began filling the rink at the beginning of January after snow over Christmas delayed the ice rink's set-up. The Barnum Park ice rink typically opens every year in mid-December or once the weather is cold enough to freeze the half a foot of water and keep it frozen. The city maintains the rink until mid-February, at which point the ice rink remains for as long as weather conditions allow. The city has outlined a series of rules for the outdoor ice rink: Temperatures should be below freezing all week long. On Friday…

Temperatures haven't been cold enough to keep Birmingham's outdoor ice rink frozen. The rink was still a pool of water on Wednesday.
The weather has been awfully frosty lately, and with the ground covered in snow and sledders hitting the hills, it may be tempting to strap on those ice skates and hit up Birmingham's outdoor ice rink in Barnum Park. Not so fast. The city's only outdoor ice rink, located at the corner of Frank and Purdy streets, was still under water Wednesday — it was, in fact, all water. According to Director of Public Services Lauren Wood, the city began filling the rink on Wednesday after a delay in setting up the ice rink due to the snow over Christmas. Wood said the water should take a few days to freeze now, and skaters should stay off for the time being. The ice rink typically opens every year in mid-December, or once the weather is cold enough to …

A local Michigan team has been selected to represent Team USA at the Nations Cup for theatrical skating. Harmony Theater Company, based out of Hartland, will travel to Spain in 2013, where two of the four teams will compete to bring home the gold for their country. With 48 young skaters representing towns across Michigan, the skaters will perform a long program and short program in a combination of theater and skating. “Theater on Ice is a combination of technical skating and theatrical skating, it’s like musical theater on ice,” coach Michelle Hunt said. “It’s done in six minutes and we can have up to 30 on our team and we tell a story from beginning to end.” Although details of their upcoming performance our kept secret, The Harmony …

The Department of Public Services said it needs consecutive days with low temperatures before it can fill and open the outdoor rink.
While some people may enjoy the recent stretch of sunny, above-freezing weather, this winter's few consecutive days with low temperatures means outdoor ice skating has been temporarily placed on hold in Birmingham. The outdoor ice rink at Barnum Park, located at the corner of Purdy and Frank streets, hasn't opened yet for the season, despite a November memo from the Department of Public Services (DPS) stating that the rink would be open to the public by mid-December. As part of its January newsletter, DPS said the ice rink would be filled and opened once temperatures remain low for several consecutive days. Meanwhile, hockey fans and ice skaters are asked to check bhamgov.org/barnum for an announcement as to when the rink will open for the…

The city's parks and recreation manager said the feedback from last year's rink in Barnum Park was mostly positive.
Birmingham residents can look forward to another season of ice skating outdoors, as the outdoor ice rink at Barnum Park is set to open for a second year. According to a memo presented at the Monday night meeting of the Birmingham City Commission, the Department of Public Services is on schedule to install and fill the rink in mid-December, weather permitting. The city will maintain the rink until Feb. 15, at which point the rink will remain in place for as long as weather conditions allow. The city will not resurface or replace rink materials after that point if the ice melts. In a memo to the commission, Parks and Recreation Manager Carrie Laird said the Barnum ice rink received mostly positive comments from the public. "Some issues arose…
