Annual high school kickoff event gets a new name and venue.
DETROIT – In a battle of champions, 2011 Division 2 victor Birmingham Brother Rice will face Division 1 champion Detroit Cass Tech in the headline game of the annual high school football season kickoff event. But it won't be at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium as the Detroit Sports Commission on Tuesday announced plans to move and rebrand the event. Since 2005, the event had been known as the Big Day Prep Showdown at EMU in Ypsilanti. This year, Wayne State University will host the event, renamed the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Tom Adams Field on Aug. 24-25. “The Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic will provide an electric, bowl-game like atmosphere for high school football in the city of …

Parents, family members and proud fans revel in team's accomplishments on the field.
The stands at Ford Field were full of proud parents and families cheering on their favorite Brother Rice High School Warriors during Friday’s state championship. But few could rival the smile Monica Church beamed amid the raucous crowd as the clock ran out. “This was just awesome! What a great way for him to end his senior year,” she said of her son, star running back Devin Church, who set a school record with a 244-yard, three-touchdown performance. “We’ve waited for this for a long time, and he’s been working so hard all year, so to get this done is awesome.” Motivated to play his best game on the biggest stage, Church had a lot of support, she said. A handful of family members trekked from their native Ohio for Thanksgiving and the …

Fans of all ages come from near and far to get a glimpse of championship football, courtesy of the Brother Rice Warriors.
DETROIT – Without a true home field to call their own during the season, Brother Rice football fans are used to traveling far and frequently to support the Warriors. Friday was certainly no exception, as hundreds of orange-and-black clad Brother Rice fans filled eight sections of Ford Field's lower bowl to cheer on the eventual Division 2 state champions. The Warriors gave them plenty to cheer about by taking an early lead that they never relinquished in the 24-14 victory. It was thanks largely to Devin Church, who ran for 244 yards on 33 carries, including all three of the Warriors' touchdowns. The fans showed the love, chanting "we got Church, we got Church" as the Lowell Red Arrows tried to defend the end zone near by the Warriors' …
Devin Church’s three touchdowns lead the Warriors 24-14 over Lowell, and to a Division 2 championship on Friday afternoon at Ford Field.
DETROIT – Devin Church stole the show in the Division 2 state football finals on Friday afternoon. In front of a lively crowd at Ford Field in Detroit, Church helped carry his Brother Rice team to a 24-14 victory over Lowell. The senior running back ran for 244 yards on 33 carries and all three of the Warriors' touchdowns. “He’s been doing that this year and for the last three years,” longtime head coach Al Fracassa said. It was Church’s electrifying 54-yard run at the end of the second quarter that put Brother Rice on track to bring home the school’s seventh state championship. With the game tied 7-7, Lowell had to punt the ball in the final minutes of the half after a quick three-and-out. Church didn’t waste any time breaking the tie on …

The senior running back leads the way for the Warriors in school's run to a seventh state title.
DETROIT – Devin Church might have saved his best for last. In the Division 2 state finals on Saturday, the Brother Rice senior running back torched the Lowell defense for 244 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in his team’s 24-14 win. “Pretty darn impressive,” Lowell head coach Noel Dean said. “ I don’t want to belittle what they do as a team, but No. 1 is a fantastic football player and I’ve seen some pretty good ones.” Dean’s defense came into the game having given up only 995 yards on the ground all season. The Northern Illinois University-bound back had more than 150 yards by halftime. He scored on a 7-yard run to give Brother Rice an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. He added a 54-yard touchdown run before the half and then…

Every day leading up to Friday's 1 p.m. matchup against Lowell, Patch will take a peek back at a key moment during the season that helped get the Warriors to where they are today. So far, we've recapped: Today's pick: Head coach Al Fracassa joined the coaching elite Oct. 21 by becoming one of only a handful of coaches in the country to reach 400 wins.
