The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office denied an arrest warrant for a Groves student who sent a threatening tweet in late December, the school's liason officer says.
No charges will be filed after a Groves High School student sent out a threatening tweet the Friday before Birmingham Schools' winter break. According to Groves' liason officer and Beverly Hills Det. Lee Davis, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office denied a warrant for the teen's arrest, noting that the tweet in question "did not fit the threats criteria." Groves parents learned of the incident early on Friday, Dec. 21 after officials were alerted overnight to "tweets of a threatening nature" generated by a Groves student and Southfield resident. Davis said Beverly Hills Police identified the student and took him into custody that night, holding him at the Oakland County Children's Village. "He apparently Tweeted or put some information …

Police and school officials were alerted overnight to a Groves student writing "tweets of a threatening nature" and later took the student into custody. Groves principal says student safety is a top priority.
A Groves High School student is in custody Friday morning after he was accused of sending out a threatening tweet on Twitter, said Groves principal Fred Procter Friday. In a note sent to parents, Procter said school officials were alerted overnight to "tweets of a threatening nature" generated by one of the school's underclassmen. The Beverly Hills Police Department was also alerted and able to "very quickly and appropriately" identify the source of the tweets and soon after took them into custody, Procter said. "I have been in constant contact with the Beverly Hills Police and have been given their assurance that there is no credible threat at Groves," Procter wrote in the Friday email. "While some chose to re-tweet the message, others …

Birmingham students are bringing the 'greatest show on Earth' to the Groves High School stage this weekend and next.
High school theater season is upon us and this weekend, the theater students from the Groves High School Performing Arts Company are bringing the circus to Birmingham. Groves premieres the Tony Award-winning musical Barnum this Saturday at the Groves auditorium, with performances featuring more than 75 cast members as singing and dancing clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers and unicyclists. The entire Groves High School marching band also makes an appearance, as does a dancing dog. Barnum tells the story of one of America's greatest businessman, conman and entertainer, P.T. Barnum — the founder of the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Playing the role of Barnum is Groves senior Nathan Willey. "Playing Barnum is…

Birmingham's two high schools face off on the football field this Friday during Groves' homecoming celebrations, and we want to know who has the most school spirit.
Some surrounding schools have to do quite a bit of traveling for their rivalry football games. In Birmingham, we just drive a short distance down Cranbrook/Evergreen. This Friday, Seaholm and Groves' varsity football teams face off for the first time this season during Groves' homecoming celebration. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Falcon field. But which team has the most spirited supporters? We want to know which school has the most spirit, so here's our challenge to you: upload your favorite photos or videos of Seaholm or Groves, including your favorite displays of the school colors, straight to this story. Friday night, we'll tally up the uploads and announce the winner in our coverage of the homecoming game Saturday morning. Upload as…

If you're a Seaholm or Groves graduate, catch up with your high school friends.
If you have ever wondered what happened to your old high school crush, the head cheerleader or maybe your friend from down the street that you lost touch with, ponder no more. Birmingham Public Schools is working to reconnect alumni from Seaholm and Groves high schools through the new BPS Alumni Association website. "Our community is a strong one, with many graduates coming back to the neighborhoods and enrolling their own children in the district," said Anne Cron, Alumni Relations Coordinator. "This isn’t a community where people meet briefly in school and then move on; they make connections and commitments that last well beyond their high school years." In September, the Birmingham Education Foundation and the district collaborated to …

Roeper and Groves seniors Aaron Keteyian and Ryan Stratton will premiere their film debut, 'Blood Angel,' at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak Thursday.
It began on Facebook: That's where Roeper senior Aaron Keteyian and Groves senion Ryan Stratton met in 2009, connected over their love for cinema and began to collaborate on a film project involving high school, friendship and lots of vampires. Now, three years later, the pair's final film — Blood Angel — will premiere Thursday at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak. When Keteyian and Stratton met, they agreed that the quality of most teenage productions was lacking. The goal behind Blood Angel then became, according to the pair, to make the highest quality film possible. That included a strict filming schedule in and around Royal Oak, Livonia, Farmington and Birmingham, including the Roeper Upper School off Adams Road. Stratton, 17, is …

Franklin resident Zach Tennen had his jaw wired shut Monday after an attack in East Lansing he said occurred because he's Jewish.
Michigan State University sophomore and 2011 Groves High School graduate Zach Tennen told police that a campus fight over the weekend was a hate crime and he was beaten because he's Jewish. According to ClickonDetroit.com, Tennen, a Franklin resident, told police the assault occurred early Sunday morning at a party in East Lansing. Tennen said his two attackers asked him if he was Jewish, then proceeded to assault him. "And they were making Nazi and Hitler symbols and they said they were part of the KKK," he told Click on Detroit, noting his attackers appeared to be college-age men. Tennen was knocked unconscious during the incident, and when he woke up, he took a cab to Lansing Sparrow Hospital. According to officials, Tennen's jaw was …

Evan Simon hopes to use time spent at Bill of Rights Institute in his efforts to "rebuild Detroit."
For Groves High School senior Evan Simon, this summer was all about learning: learning, that is, how to rebuild Detroit using lessons learned from the U.S. Consitution. Simon, 16, recently returned from a weeklong course at the Bill of Rights Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Arlington, VA dedicated to the United States Consitution. As part of the program, Simon, who earned a scholarship from Ford Motor Company, joined 60 other high school students from around the country in learning from constitutional scholars at Marymount University. Scholars also led students on tours of Mount Vernon and the U.S. Capitol. But Simon said the lessons he learnd will be used during his volunteer efforts throughout Metro Detroit. Simon, who wants…

Oh puhleez. This little kid is scared of small dogs. What he did was a harmless prank. The local cops should focus on the epidemic of property crimes happening daily in Beverly Hills and Birmingham, courtesy of the residents of Detroit and the wonderful SMART bus system.   more ›
