Seaholm Stuns Groves With 22-15 Win During Crosstown Rivalry Game

Seaholm also takes home a victory in Birmingham Patch's school spirit contest, uploading more than 80 photos and videos of Maple pride.

Friday was a tough night to be a Groves football fan, after inter-city rival Seaholm (literally) rained on the Falcons' homecoming celebrations.  In a stunning, come-from-behind victory, Seaholm defeated Groves 22-15 during Birmingham's annual crosstown rivalry game. Seaholm's win was revenge for last year's loss to Groves, when the Falcons defeated the Maples 21-3. Groves started the game on top, entering the third quarter 15-0. However, the third quarter was Seaholm's quarter, during which the Maples scored two touchdowns to come within one point of the Falcons, bringing the score to 15-14. Then, it was the fourth quarter. With a little less than three minutes left in the game, Groves brought the ball within one yard of the endzone, …

Groves has its second home game of the season scheduled for Friday, while the 2-1 Maples head to Berkley.

The Groves High School varsity football team will have a chance redeem itself Friday night in its second home game of the season. Meanwhile, the Seaholm High School varsity Maples travel to Berkley for a game at 7 p.m. Seaholm is 2-1 this season, after losing to Detroit Country Day last week. This is the third year for the renewed Seaholm-Berkley match-up, after the two schools didn't play each for more than a decade. Seaholm and Berkley have split the past two games, with Seaholm winning last year 36-17. Like Seaholm, Berkley is 2-1 overall this …

Groves Ends Football Season with 53-7 Playoffs Loss to Southfield

The Falcons are eliminated from the post-season, finishing 6-4 overall.

Groves High School’s season came to an end Saturday night as the Falcons lost at home to Southfield, 53-7, in the first round of the state football playoffs. Senior running back Keon Collier had another solid game for Birmingham  Groves (6-4), rushing for 128 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, but it was not enough for the Falcons to overcome a talented Southfield team. Collier’s 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter were the only points for Groves in the game. Southfield (7-3) scored on all six of its first-half possessions, as the Groves defense was unable to slow down a potent offense led by quarterback Justin Danzy and running back Brandon Watkins.
