Feature Photos: Griffin Claw Brewing Company Breaks Ground in Rail District

Birmingham's newest brewery and restaurant will be located on Eton Street and co-owned by Bonnie LePage, wife of Big Rock owner Norman LaPage.

The dirt flew Thursday afternoon during the official groundbreaking for the Griffin Claw Brewing Co., the latest brainchild from Norman and Bonnie LePage, owners of the Big Rock Chop House and The Reserve. The brewery, which will be located at 563 and 575 S. Eton St., is officially owned by Bonnie LePage and Mary Nicholson. The nearly 12,000-square-foot space will comprise of a brewery and adjoining tasting room as well as a restaurant with an outdoor beer garden. The brewing company will also be the new home for Big Rock's award-winning beer and the restaurant's brewmaster, Dan Rogers, who will oversee all the brewing, distributing and operations for the facility. After Long Fight, Brewery and Restaurant Moving into Rail District

Despite concerns from residents in the surrounding neighborhood, the Griffin Claw Brewing Co. received final approval from the City Commission on Monday.

It took nearly three hours to make the decision, but a combination brewery, restaurant and beer garden will soon be moving into Birmingham's Rail District. After a public comment session in which dozens of residents and area business owners chimed in, commissioners unanimously agreed to approve the final site plan and special land-use permit for the Griffin Claw Brewing Co. at their Monday night meeting. The restaurant is looking to move into 563 and 575 S. Eton St., which is currently empty. However, the brewery ran up against formidable opposition during the months in which the issue traveled through the city's approval process. In Brief: City Commission Gives Green Light to Rail District Brewery

In front of a packed house and despite several complaints from residents, the City Commission approved plans for the Griffin Claw Brewing Company on Eton Street.

Monday was a long and busy night for the Birmingham City Commission, but after three hours of discussion, presentations and public comments, commissioners approved the final site plans and special land use permit for the Griffin Claw Brewing Company for 563 and 575 Eton St. The restaurant will be owned and operated by Norman LaPage, who currently owns Birmingham's Big Rock Chop House and The Reserve, both of which are located down the street from the proposed lot next to the Whistle Stop Restaurant. The lot is currently empty except for a small building on the north corner, which will be torn down to make way for the nearly 12,000 square-foot brewery, restaurant and beer garden. I am assuming you do not live in the rail district. peacefully exist as the cars fly up and down our 25 mph street going upwards of 45 and 50 while our kids play and our pets try not to get hit.   more ›
