Cost of Being Buried at Birmingham's Greenwood Cemetery Just Went Up

The increase in burial fees, as well as other fees at Birmingham's historic cemetery, are meant to match current market rates and bring in more money.

It just got a little more expensive to settle into your final resting place at Greenwood Cemetery. At the Monday night meeting of the Birmingham City Commission, commissioners voted to raise the rates at Birmingham's historic cemetery on Oak, including the fees for full burials and internment of cremated remains. The city will now charge $1,200 for a full burial — up from $600 — a change that city officials argue reflects the current market prices in the cemetery industry. Also approved by commissioners Monday is a new policy that will allow grave plot owners, or their heirs, to bury up to two sets of cremated remains in a plot already inhabited by a casket. The cost for each cremation burial is now $750. The recommendations were submitted…

More Space and More Money: Birmingham Looks to Improve Greenwood Cemetery

With residents asking for plots at Birmingham's historic cemetery, but no where to put them, the city considers adding grave plots at Greenwood and setting up an endowment fund.

There's a waiting list of more than 100 Birmingham residents who want to be buried in Greenwood Cemetery, the historic cemetery on Oak that serves as the final resting place for Martha Baldwin and many more of the city's most lauded citizens from the past 200 years. At the Oct. 29 City Commission meeting, commissioners heard a report from L.F. Sloane Consulting Group, Inc. — a professional cemetary consulting firm — that outlined the current state of Greenwood and ways the cemetery could better serve …

Poll: Should Birmingham Expand Greenwood Cemetery?

City Clerk Laura Broski said there's a waiting list of those who want to be buried at the historic city cemetery.

Should Birmingham think about expanding Greenwood Cemetery? That's the question city commissioners discussed at their meeting last Monday, when Commisssioner Rackeline Hoff noted that there's currently a waiting list of 40 people who want to buy plots at the historic cemetery. Currently, all the plots at the cemetery have been sold but City Clerk Laura Broski said the clerk's office is working to reclaim unused cemetery plots at Greenwood and other city grave sites. At the city's long-range planning session on Jan. 21, Broski also said the city clerk's office will conduct a physical inventory of all city graves in 2012, investigating each with ground-penetrating radar. If a plot is empty, Broski said her office will track down the owner to…
