"We had a phenomenal 2012 season," Director of Public Services Lauren Wood told the city commission earlier this week during her 2012 Golf Report.
Last year was a good year for Birmingham's two golf courses. "We had a phenomenal 2012 season," said Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood, speaking to the Birmingham City Commission Monday about the Springdale Golf Course and Lincoln Hills Golf Course, both of which brought in more money last year. According to the 2012 Golf Report, both courses brought in $187,000 more in revenue in 2012, a 21 percent jump over the 2011 season. In addition, 54,236 rounds of golf were played during the 2012 season, which began during a warm March and extended through November. That's up from just over 42,000 rounds played in 2011. At the end of the year, Wood said the golf courses brought in $1.07 million in revenue last year, resulting in …

"We've had a really impressive year," Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood said, noting the 2012 season was the best the city's golf courses have seen in five years.
After struggling for several years, Birmingham's two public golf courses may be back on the track to success. According to Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood, 2012 was a good season for both the Lincoln Hills Golf Course and Springdale Golf Course. "We've had a really impressive year," Wood said as part of her 2013 strategy report on the city's two public golf courses, presented to the Birmingham City Commission on Nov. 12. As of the beginning of November, Wood said more than 53,000 rounds of golf had been played at both golf courses during the 2012 season. That's up from just over 42,000 rounds played by the end of the 2011 season. Meanwhile, memberships at both courses are up 31 percent in 2012, Wood said, while total …

Both the Warriors and Cranes bested the competition in their respective divisions during the two-day tourney, which concluded Saturday.
Both Brother Rice High School and Cranbrook-Kingswood more than represented the Bloomfield area well during the state golf finals this weekend, winning titles for their respective programs, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Website. Led by Sean Friel's 73 score on Saturday, the Warriors barely edged out Battle Creek Lakeview with a two-day total score of 602 to 603 at the Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University. Friel, who shot a 75 Saturday, finished with the team's top total score of 148 — tied for fourth best in the tournament. Trailing by just one stroke was teammate Kyle Gaines, and by three was Lucas Belanger. Brother Rice entered the competition Saturday in 5th place. Cranbrook's…

According to the 2012 Golf Report, the Springdale and Lincoln Hills golf courses lost $146,122 in 2011.
Revenues and the number of golfers hitting the links continue to decrease at Birmingham's two golf courses, according to the 2012 Golf Report as presented to the Birmingham City Commission on Monday night. According to Assistant Director of Public Services Jeff Bremer, the number of rounds of golf played at the Springdale Golf Course and Lincoln Hills Golf Course in 2011 dropped 11.72 percent from the previous year. This translates into an operating deficit of $146,122 for both courses in 2011, up considerably from 2010's deficit of $81,471. "I wish I could be here with better news but unfortunately, I can not say anything but we lost money in 2011," Bremer said. "We're at a loss to really understand how, in one season, we lost (almost) 6,…

Francesco Ruffino's 2-under-par 70 nearly put him in the playoff for the state title Saturday at Katke-Cousins.
ROCHESTER — Francesco Ruffino, a sophomore from Seaholm High School, shot a 2-under-par 70 Saturday to finish in third place at the Division 1 state golf finals. The Seaholm sophomore finished the tournament with a score of 145, just one stroke behind North Farmington’s Max Kollin and Davison’s Kyle Kenkel. Kollin played Kenkel in a playoff and won it on hole No. 1 with a birdie. Ruffino was disappointed that he didn't get to tee off in the playoff battle. “It’s very difficult, especially with last year coming in second place,” Ruffino said. “I definitely wanted to win. It wasn’t my time right now; maybe next year.” Seaholm was in Division 2 last season, and Ruffino finished four strokes behind leader Joey Garber from Petoskey (146 to 142…

It was a strong first day for Warrior golfers at the Division 1 state finals Friday at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course.
ROCHESTER — The Brother Rice varsity golf team is in a good position for day two of the Division 1 golf state finals Saturday at Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The Warriors finished Friday with a combined score of 305. They are in third place, only eight strokes back of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, who finished the day in first place with a 297. Detroit Catholic Central is in second with a score of 304. The same three teams finished in the top three last year. Catholic Central won the team state championship by 14 strokes over Forest Hills while Brother Rice finished third. Out of the 15 schools competing this year, only four finished the first day with scores under 310 strokes. “It’s a nice position to be,” Brother Rice coach Dan Bumpus…

Sophomore talks with Patch about his first round score of 75 on Friday.
ROCHESTER – Seaholm High School sophomore Francesco Ruffino wasn’t thrilled with his performance on the first day of the Division 1 state golf finals at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course on Friday. Ruffino shot a three-over-par 75 to finish four strokes back of the individual leaders. Otto Black from Pickney and Max Rispler from Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central were tied for the lead at 71. Ruffino had an up-and-down day that culminated with a frustrating final three holes (Ruffino started the day on No. 4 and finished on No. 3). He had a chance for birdies on No. 1 and No. 3, but missed two makeable putts to finish with pars on both holes. On No. 2 he hit a tee shot to the right of the fairway in three-foot tall grass. He recovered with a …
