The Season Is Here: Where to Get the Flu Shot in Birmingham

Here's where to get an influenza vaccine, how to recognize symptoms and what to know about treatment if you get sick.

Flu season is coming early to parts of the United States, including Michigan. According to the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Flu Activity Reports, influenza levels are on the rise across the country, particularly in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennesse — states that are reporting flu activity not normally seen until January. The flu season typically peaks in January and February. In Michigan, meanwhile, Google Flu Trends reports flu rates to be "high" this December, up from last year's low to moderate rating. The Michigan Department of Community Health has, in fact, upgraded flu activity in the state from "sporatic" to "local," reflecting the recent increases in confirmed flu cases as well as a facility outbreak in …

Cold and flu season is approaching - and fast. With the temperatures outside dropping pretty rapidly, we're curious how you feel about getting flu shots. Locations like CVS, Walgreens and the Oakland County Health Department welcome walk-ins, no appointment necessary. Are you one of those people who swears by getting a flu shot every fall? Possibly, you're a non-believer in them or perhaps, just not a fan of needles? Or maybe, you're one of the lucky ones who just never gets sick (in that case, we are extremely envious). 5 Things To Know This Week: Candidate Forums, Our Town Opening Party

Here's what you need to know about Birmingham this week.

City Commission, Planning Board to meet: The Birmingham City Commission will meet for a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, while the city's Planning Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Most meetings will take place on the second floor of Birmingham City Hall. League of Women Voters to hold candidate forums: The League of Women Voters will hold candidate forums for those running for the Library Board and the Birmingham City Commission in the Nov. 8 election. The library board forum begins at 6:30 p.m. while the city commission forum begins at 7:15 p.m. Both forums will take place in the basement of Baldwin Public Library.
