Birmingham Bans Fireworks Except on National Holidays

Mayor says enforcing laws is time-consuming for local police while a city commissioner predicts more accidents in light of a newly relaxed Michigan law.

If you're planning on setting off some fireworks at your backyard barbecues this summer, think again. Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission amended its fireworks ordinance, effectively banning the ignition, discharge and use of consumer fireworks except for the day of, before and after a national holiday. The move comes after the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act went into effect at the beginning of the year, repealing former sections of the Michigan Penal Code regarding fireworks and setting new regulations for their purchase, sale and use. According to Birmingham Fire Chief Mike Metz, the act prohibits local governments from regulating the sale, display, storage, transportation or distribution of fireworks. What local governments can …

Fireworks Tents, Storefronts Sprout Widely Under New Michigan Law

Hundreds of local sellers peddle bottle rockets, Roman candles and other dazzlers for summer revelry.

Get set for a loud and lively fireworks season as dozens of new sales outlets take advantage of a relaxed state law in effect this year. Now that consumers can buy airborne fireworks without leaving Michigan, more than 200 retail sales permits have been issued to temporary sites and stores around Metro Detroit, MLive Media Group reports. Macomb tops the list with 86 sellers, followed by Oakland (61), Wayne (70) and Livingston (38). Some have colorful names — such as Thunderking in Rochester Hills, Red Dragon in Shelby Township and TNT Fireworks in Royal Oak. Others are generic tents, sprouting like carnivals as a sign of the season. Churches benefit from sales at sites in Royal Oak and White Lake. It became legal this year to sell bottle …

Ridiculous idea! Interesting to see how things go this year. What happened to the governor's "Best Practice" guideline? This is like the removal of the requirement to wear helmets on motorcycles... to increase the number of out of state visitors to Michigan. Wonder how many $ that will bring in. Will these changes make enough money to cover the expenses of those harmed by these bills?   more ›

New Michigan Laws for 2012 Govern Foreclosures, Schools, Fireworks and Jobless Benefits

Statutes regulating film incentives, heating aid, business taxes and public safety mergers also take effect.

Local residents, workers and employers are affected by Michigan laws that took effect in late December or will do so as calendars flip to 2012. Gov. Rick Snyder this year signed legislation regulating home foreclosures, charter schools, student bullying, teachers' unions and other areas. Take a look at some of what's now the law of our state as a new year starts: Mortgage lenders must provide a list of nonprofit consumer counselors with the first foreclosure step so borrowers can seek immediate advice. Two bills signed Dec. 22 also provide additional time and ways for owners to arrange modifications such as interest rate reduction and principal reduction to cut monthly payments. To minimize solicitations by for-profit "rescue" advisers, …

Viewfinder: Birmingham's Fireworks Light Up the Sky at Lincoln Hills

The City of Birmingham's annual fireworks show was a hit with the large crowd in and around Lincoln Hills Golf Course.

The annual Birmingham Fireworks Show attracted a large, enthusiastic crowd from Birmingham and other metro Detroit communities. It was a pleasant, somewhat overcast night, with a cool breeze. As the sun set, the crowd was treated to subtle changes in the color of the sky, followed by an explosion of color as the fireworks show kicked off at dusk.
