The Birmingham-based school for special learners purchased iPads loaded with reading applications using grant money from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Birmingham's Eton Academy is the recipient of a grant that will go straight toward helping students who struggle the most with reading. The Eton Academy — the Birmingham-based school for students in grades 1-12 with learning challenges — received $3,000 from the Dollar General Literarcy Foundation as part of their Youth Literacy Grant program. At Eton, the grant money has been used to purchase iPads downloaded with various applications to help struggling readers. Eton's 2011-12 yearbook won awards for cover design and total yearbook design in a contest sponsored by Entourage Yearbooks.
Several students from Birmingham's Eton Academy took home first place in a nationwide yearbook contest sponsored by the publisher, Entourage Yearbooks. The Eton yearbook for 2011-12 won first place for cover design and earned an honorable mention for yearbook design in the contest. The competition included yearbooks from hundreds from schools from all 50 states. “I am thrilled that our students’ hard work and creativity is being recognized,” said Eton Visual Arts Teacher and Yearbook Advisor, Linus Parr. “This is the second consecutive year Eton Academy students have earned top awards from Entourage and our entire school is really excited," Parr added. The Birmingham-based school for special learners celebrated their 26th graduation with one of the largest graduating classes in the school's history.
For the 19 graduating seniors of the Eton Academy class of 2012, Friday was, according to head of school Pete Pullen, one of the "greatest days of their lives." "Do you remember when you experienced the greatest moment of your life?" Pullen asked the packed crowd during the Friday afternoon graduation ceremony. "That's what today represents for the class of 2012 — the greatest day of their lives." The class of 2012 was the 26th graduating class from the Eton Academy, an independent co-educational school for students with reading, attention and other learning challenges. Ten students from the Eton Academy collected $600 for the Red Cross clean-up effort in Dexter.
Ten upper school students in the Giving Back to the Community Class at Birmingham's Eton Academy — a school for special learners — collected $600 last week for the Red Cross clean-up effort in Dexter. The students hosted a "Dress Down Day" for the entire school and collected donations. Funds will be used to clean up from the tornado that struck Dexter a few weeks ago. The class includes: Austin Conway, Hannah Campbell, Aidan Crane, Lauren Daniels, Lindsey Duda, Evan Lane, Michael Rosenthal, Brett Rons, Sean Sullivan and Eli Yaker.

The Eton Academy will host its 26th annual gala and auction next weekend to raise critical scholarship and operating funds for the Birmingham-based school for learning challenges. “This event is an amazing example of the deep community support for different learners,” said Eton's head of school, Pete Pullen. “This is a very special time at Eton as we reflect on the positive stories of our current students, alumni, teachers and families and set our sights on the future of preparing our students for success.” Eton is one of the few students in the midwest designed specifically for students with reading, ADHD and other learning challenges. The Eton Academy, a specialized independent school for students with learning challenges, recently received a $2,000 grant from the MEEMIC Insurance Foundation. Rick Pinkos from MEEMIC’s Randahl Insurance Agency in Birmingham presented the grant to students, teachers and school officials on Jan. 31. The grant will be used to purchase a Van de Graaff generator to kick off the school’s new science curriculum and help Eton’s 195 students conceptualize electrostatics.
