Birmingham Police Arrest 2 Drunk Drivers; Troy Man Arrested for Marijuana Possession

According to police reports, officers first responded to the scene of a fender-bender near Woodward and Lincoln a little after midnight on Sunday, Dec. 30. Police discovered that the driver who had rear-ended the other vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Ypsilanti, had a BAC twice over the legal limit. He was arrested for second degree operating while intoxciated. A little later that night, around 4 a.m., officers pulled over another vehicle on Woodwar near Wimbleton for driving erractically. According to store employees, the couple were both approximately 30-40 years old. As the couple tried to wheel the shopping cart out the rear door of CVS around 2 p.m., police reports say the manager confronted them and asked for a receipt. Every year, downtown Birmingham expects thousands of holiday-makers ready to ring in the new year. If you're one of those heading out to party, however, do you know how many drinks you can have before you're in danger of getting a drunk driving violation? When police pull drivers over for suspected drunken driving, officers ask them to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test to measure Blood Alcohol Content. A BAC test measures the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. Michigan's legal limit is 0.08. Recent Drunk Driving Arrest, Wrong-Way Crash on Woodward Fit National Trend

Two alcohol-related incidents in the past week demonstrate what a new national study found about wrong-way crashes.

Two incidents on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham during the past week are local examples of what a new national study concluded about wrong-way crashes.  On average, 360 people die each year in wrong-way collisions, researchers with the National Transportation Safety Board found. And the majority of those crashes, nearly 60 percent, involve alcohol. The study analyzed data from more than 1,500 crashes between 2004 and 2009. In 59 percent of the accidents, wrong-way drivers had blood alcohol levels more than twice the legal limit, researchers said. In another 10 percent of the crashes, drivers had alcohol levels between .08 and .14. The limit in most instances is .08. Officials with the Bloomfield Hills Department of …

According to police reports, a resident on the 1800 block of Redding said a decorative fence in his front yard had been damaged. The fence consisted of 20 white poles topped with horse heads connected by chains, reports state. At 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, police officers found several poles had been pulled out of the ground and thrown around the front yard, along with several horse heads and the chains. According to police reports, the theft occurred around 10 a.m. Monday. Another volunteer said around that time, they saw a man with dirty blond hair go into the nursery. The wallet was later found at a psychiatrist's office on North Old Woodward with only $11 in cash missing. A drunk driver was arrested at the Peabody Street Parking Garage last Friday. According to police reports, the incident occurred overnight Friday, Nov. 23, with employees discovering the missing trees around 9 a.m. Saturday. The trees had been stored in a fenced lot, police reports state. Employees and police believe the thief or thieves pitched the Christmas trees over the fence and carried them away in some type of vehicle. Police: Drunk Driver Caught on Woodward, Man Ticketed for Urinating Outside Movie Theater

Check out the latest reports from the Birmingham Police Department: Birmingham police arrested a 23-year-old Troy woman on a drunken driving charge last Saturday. According to police reports, officers observed the woman's car driving northbound on Woodward near South Adams at about 2 a.m. According to the officer, both the woman's front and rear passenger side tires were flat. When police pulled her over, the woman failed several sobriety tests and was taken into custody, reports state. The woman was held until sober, posted bond and was later released.
