Detroit Performer Mike Ellison Helps Roeper Students Plan Diversity Day

This year's Diversity Day will feature student-led workshops on how to foster respect and sensitivity among young people.

The students and staff at Birmingham's Roeper School will be celebrating their annual Diversity Day with a little help from a big name this year. Actor, songwriter, poet and Detroit-based performer Mike Ellison has been working all year with various staff members and 19 students at the Roeper Upper School to plan the 2012 Diversity Day, to be held all day today at the school's Birmingham campus. The goal of Roeper's Diversity Day is to build community by focusing on how to honor all parts of a person — from their religion, apperance, political views and more. Roeper's middle and upper school campus in Birmingham celebrated wheelchair athletes during their Diversity Day celebration on March 14.

Roeper's middle and upper school students had the chance to learn what it's like for the thousands of Michigan's wheelchair athletes during the school's annual Diversity Day on March 14. Roeper's Diversity Day celebration is held annually to raise awareness and stress the importance of personal and cultural differences. This year, activities and guest speakers focused on educating students on what it's like living with a disability. Students attended presentations by several athletes in wheelchairs, concluding with a wheelchair basketball game. The presentations were led by guest speaker Jerry Sarasin, a Troy resident who at 24, was involved in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident that left him completely paralyzed from the waist down. Now, …
