Derby Middle School to Host DSO Young Musician Program This Summer

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will hold a six-day intensive workshop for teenage musicians in Birmingham this summer, culminating in a performance at Detroit's Orchestra Hall.

Metro Detroit's young musicians should start tuning those instruments in preparation for the Avanti Summer MusicFest, scheduled for July 16-21 at Birmingham's Derby Middle School. The six-day intensive camp is geared for musicians ages 14-18 and is hosted by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), the Musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (MDSO) and Save Our Symphony (SOS). During Avanti, students will have the opportunity to train with DSO musicians and then perform on the world-renowned stage at historic Orchestra Hall in Detroit. "Avanti is yet another example of the progressive way in which all the components of the DSO is uniting," said DSO music director Leonard Slatkin in a recent press release. Field Trip Grants Let Birmingham Students Experience Art, History, Stage Shows

Michigan Youth Arts is distributing state money for enrichment outings this spring.

Budget-pinched schools will use newly-announced state support for spring field trips to classical concerts, stage shows, art exhibits and a historical presentation.      Michigan Youth Arts, a nonprofit group based in Royal Oak, this week awarded nearly $39,000 in Arts and Culture Trek grants. Teachers applied for up to $500 to cover transportation costs. Southeast Michigan students from elementary grades through high school will see the Jewish Ensemble Theater in West Bloomfield, Oakland University's Art Gallery in Rochester, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, Detroit Institute of Arts and other destinations.   "All students deserve access to a quality education that includes hands-on experiences," says a statement from …
