The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and American House Senior Living Communities are teaming up in 2013 to bring DSO music to thousands of Metro Detroit seniors, including many in the Birmingham area. The DSO will be sending individual musicians and small ensembles to more than 20 American House locations throughout Metro Detroit, a recent press release said, as part of its Neighborhood Residency Initaitive. Launched in 2011, the Neighborhood Residency Initiative combines orchestra concerts and chamber music with educational and social service partnerships and senior engagement programs. Attention young musicians: the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's (DSO) young musician workshop returns to Birmingham this summer and they're now accepting applications. The AVANTI Summer MusicFest returns to Derby Middle School this July for six days of intensive music workshops. The program is open to music students age 13-18 throughout Metro Detroit. During the program, students complete a week of intense study and instruction under the tutelage of 50 DSO musicans, including two hours a day in group rehearsal and two hours in sectionals. Shain Park is one of the Oakland County nominees in a contest sponsored by the DSO and the DTE Energy Foundation. The concerts will take place the week of Sept. 17.
