Football Finals: Brother Rice, Country Day Seek State Titles at Ford Field

The Warriors will try to reach another milestone for legendary coach Al Fracassa in Division 2, while County Day competes for the school's first crown in Division 4.

You're in luck, and have a great opportunity to see some of the future stars of the game today when the Michigan High School Athletic Association Football Finals begin. Of Interest: Warriors in the Crowd; Faces of the Brother Rice fans at Ford Field for the 2011 Finals Brother Rice topped Wyandotte 31-3 in a dominant performance last week, and has won seven straight games. Though the regular-season schedule is full of difficult opponents both in and outside of the Catholic League, The Warriors may have its toughest task of the season against Muskegon. Highlight Reel: Seaholm and Roeper Cross Country Teams Come Up Big

Runners from both schools did well against 30 teams at Old Skool Classic on Saturday.

Seaholm, Roeper Cross country coaches at Seaholm and Roeper both had things to be happy about with after the 2011 Old Skool Classic at Wolcott Farm on Saturday. The tournament featured more than 30 schools from around the state and hundreds of runners. During the race, runners ran against students in their own grade, making the meet unique from other cross country meets. Seaholm had more than 60 runners at the race and scored eight top ten finishes. Tess Wilberding was the top finisher for the Maples. The junior won her year’s group with a 5,000 meter time of 20:08. Junior teammates Mallory Wilberding (21:05; fifth place), her sister, and Selena Wallace (21:36; eighth place) also finished in the top ten. The Seaholm girls team also had a …

Are you ready for some football? Groves and Seaholm are looking to pick up some big wins on the gridiron this week, while tennis and cross country also have big matches in the lineup. Here's a look at the big games ahead: Groves The Groves High School varsity football team will head to Andover this week for a game at 7 p.m. Friday. The Falcons will try to keep the longest winning streak the school has had in seven years going against a Barons team still searching for their first win.  Groves running back Keon Collier has scored four touchdowns in each of the past two games — can he make it three in a row? Andover’s defense has struggled at times, especially with its depth, so it's definitely possible. Groves' offense has helped the team …

Highlight Reel: Seaholm Swimming Stays Hot, Football Teams Score Big Wins

The Maples varsity boys soccer team was a perfect 3-0 this week and the varsity girls swim team remains unbeaten.

It was a busy week in Birmingham sports, with the Seaholm boys soccer team winning big against Hazel Park and rival Groves. Meanwhile, Birmingham-area football teams had a good weekend as well, with wins from Groves, Seaholm and Detroit Country Day. Seaholm The Seaholm varsity boys soccer team put together a hat trick of shutouts this week. Its defense didn’t allow a single goal while the Maples have only allowed one goal in their last five games.  On Tuesday, Seaholm played the first of two games against Hazel Park, winning 11-0 at home. The Maples visited the Vikings on Thursday and shut them out again 8-0. Seaholm played a closer game at rival Groves on Friday, but still won 3-0. Groves plays Seaholm and Country Day faces off against Brother Rice on the soccer field this week.

It's a big week for soccer and football this week at Birmingham area high schools. Here's a look at the big games ahead: Another week, another battle between the Falcons and Maples. At 7 p.m. Friday, the Seaholm and Groves' boys soccer teams will play at Groves. Seaholm is coming off a nice 2-1 win over Lahser last week that pushed its record over .500 on the season (3-2). It will look to build on that momentum in a busy week. Other games on the pitch this week include: The Groves High School football team hasn’t won three games in a row since 2004. Not so coincidently it was the last time the Falcons made the playoffs. On Friday, they will have a chance to put together three wins in a row and equal last year’s win total in just four weeks…

Highlight Reel: Groves Football Earns First Winning Streak Since 2008

The Falcons' 38-37 double overtime win over Berkley was the game of the week for Birmingham.

A wild week of football for Birmingham-area schools was the big story this week. Groves and Seaholm high schools both played two very close games that could prove pivotal later this season in the race to the playoffs. Country Day Football Picks Up First Win

The Yellowjackets stop a two-game losing streak with 49-0 thrashing of Harper Woods Thursday night.

BEVERLY HILLS – For at least one week, the Detroit Country Day varsity football team can breathe a sigh of relief. The Yellowjackets opened the season by dropping their first two games to Harper Woods Chandler Park and University of Detroit Jesuit. Thursday night it stopped the bleeding with a 49-0 win over Harper Woods at home. “We needed to get that (win),” Country Day Head Coach Dan MacLean said. “It’s a great group of kids and they’ve just struggled. Even though we got some seniors, most of them are playing their first year of starting football. We’ve played hard, but we might have been our own worst enemies in those first two games.
