Oakland County teams shine at state tennis finals, including Brother Rice who was runner up in Division 1 play.
Oakland County schools were well represented at the varsity boys state tennis finals over the weekend, with several Birmingham-area teams finishing well near the tops of their respective divisions. Brother Rice High School finished in the top three in Division 1 for the third straight year, winning two individual titles. But it was Detroit Country Day that might have had the most impressive team performance in any division, claiming the Division 3 championship and four individual titles, and reaching the finals in seven of the eight flights. The Brother Rice varsity boys tennis team faces two of the top teams in Division 3 to kick off the year.
The fall sports season kicks into high gear after Labor Day weekend, but there was still some great action last week. Highlights included the Groves football home opener, a perfect week for the Seaholm swim team, and some of the state’s tennis heavyweights battling it out for an early win. Various The Brother Rice varsity tennis team had a solid first week of the season, picking up a win and a tie against two of the top teams in the state. On Wednesday, the Warriors beat Detroit Country Day 6-2. They were a perfect 4-0 in doubles actions and combined wins by Gunnar Peery in No. 2 singles and Johnny Cameron in No. 4 singles were enough to pick up the win. The Yellowjackets boys tennis team took second in the state last year. Can they make it to the top spot this year?
The Detroit Country Day boys tennis team will enter the upcoming season with the highest of aspirations. In 2010, the Yellowjackets finished second in the state. With nine returners on his 2011 squad, Yellowjackets’ head coach Tom Ellis sees good things on the horizon for the program. “We expect to be back right where we were last year, battling it out at the end for a state championship,” he said. “There are a lot of talented players coming back for us, and they know what it takes to win. I want those guys who came close to getting that state title last season to get a chance to redeem themselves.” Sven Kranz is the club’s No. 1 player, with Rishi Patel filling the No. 2 spot.
