I thought that all five candidates did a very nice job Tuesday evening at the LWV. As a voter, I feel fortunate to have five highly talented individuals to choose from. That said, I thought that Rob Lawrence was articulate, on point, and had a slight edge Tuesday evening.   more ›

The forum begins at 7 p.m. at Baldwin Public Library and will be hosted by Judy Bateman. Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Wolkinson's Strengths Match What Michigan Needs

The first-time candidate has three specific qualities that put him ahead of the GOP field in the 40th District House race.

This letter was received by Birmingham Patch Editor Laura Houser. A successful state representative should have a least three specific strengths: intelligence, political savvy and leadership. Of the 110 current state representatives, not one of them is an economist. Mr. Wolkinson earned both a bachelor's and master's of economics from U-M by age 21. As the intellectual candidate, he is uniquely qualified to understand the state's struggle between growth and austerity, and, importantly, to explain to legislators and voters alike the dead-weight economic losses associated with over-taxation. Mr. Wolkinson has received the endorsements of Right to Life and the Farm Bureau,  and has brought together former political foes Rocky Raczkowski and …

Don't regard Wolkinsin as the intellectaulo candidate. Do regard him as good fresh face who needs to hold elected office before he becomes my state rep, I am supporting McCready. Probably not an intellectual either but worked his way through WMU, Owns a business in Bham, and was Mayor Bloomfield Hills and endorsed by Detroit Free Press and former Township Supervisor David Payne.   more ›

Meet the Candidates: David Wolkinson Running to Keep Jobs in Michigan

During the countdown to the Aug. 7 primary, Patch is bringing you profiles of the candidates running for local office.

The Aug. 7 primary election is drawing closer every day, but how much do you really know about the names on the ballot? Patch is interviewing candidates running in the Aug. 7 primary, including the four candidates vying to be on the Republican ticket for the 40th District's seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. The seat is currently filled by Rep. Chuck Moss (R-Birmingham), who is unable to run for re-election this year due to term limits (though Moss is looking to run for Sen. John Pappageorge's seat in 2014). After redistricting, the 40th district will be composed of Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, and a portion of West Bloomfield. Running for the spot are Birmingham Board of Education's Robert Lawrence and …

Seriously. The children on his brochure are not even his. Why does he try to act like he is a family man? We know Potts will represent minority interests because he has proven it as a commissioner. Gov. Snyder had a chance to work with him as a state employee and took a pass. I think given Wolkinson's inexperience, the questionable tactics of his high school advisor, the 40th district will take a…   more ›

State House Candidate's TV Show Raises 'Equal-Time' Campaign Issue

Two rivals and editorial question County Commissioner Potts' co-hosting role.

The first campaign issue has flared in a three-way Republican primary campaign for the 40th State House District seat. Robert Lawrence and David Wolkinson say it's improper for their rival, David Potts, to continue as co-host of a local cable TV public affairs show. Potts and state Rep. Chuck Moss host Eye on Oakland, a half-hour studio discussion that airs two to four times a month on Bloomfield Community Television. They and guests discuss issues such as the state budget, education, road maintenance, Michigan's gasoline tax and economic development. "The show focuses on political decisions and their impact on local and state-level constituents," notes Lawrence in an email response to questions from Patch. "Setting aside his co-hosting …

Bloomfield Township Cable provides the vehicle to program these shows gives their permission for what cable shows are on TV.....so why are they allowing legally declared candidates , such as Potts, Savoie and soon Moss to gain an unfair edge with taxpayer PEG finder dollars to run their campaigns? By the time they decide the election will be over and the candidates will have their fait accompli.   more ›

Republican David Wolkinson said Friday that he will be running for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 40th District.

Wolkinson will be running as a Republican. Before he can run for the seat now occupied by Rep. Chuck Moss (R-Birmingham), Wolkinson will have to face Oakland County Commissioner Dave Potts and Birmingham Board of Education member Robert Lawrence in the August primary as all three vie for a spot on the Republican ticket.
