Letter to the Editor: Why Firefighters Supported Weaver, Walsh in Nov. 8 Election

Members of the Birmingham Firefighters Association Local 911 explain why they endorsed Vicki Walsh and Doug Weaver for City Commission in last week's elections.

This letter was submitted by members of the Birmingham Firefighters Association Local 911. We write you this letter at the request of some local media sources and numerous Birmingham citizens who have asked us why we supported Dr. Doug Weaver and Vicki Walsh in this past Commissioner race. The answer is simple … communication, consideration and understanding.  Both Dr. Weaver and Mrs. Walsh have spent a good deal of time with us to better understand the demands and stress that public safety personnel face day in and day out. They realize the importance of attracting and retaining qualified professionals to continue the excellence of service the citizens of Birmingham receive and have a right to expect. Incumbents Win City Commission, School Board Seats

Birmingham Public Schools millage renewal also passes in Tuesday's election which saw a higher-than-expected turnout at the polls.

Incumbents from the Birmingham City Commission and Birmingham Board of Education won back their seats during Tuesday's election while voters overwhelmingly approved the schools millage renewal. The tension was thick at City Hall after polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday as representatives from the City Clerk's office reported precinct results every 30 minutes, finally announcing the winners at 11 p.m. Incumbents Scott Moore, Tom McDaniel, Gordon Rinschler and George Dilgard were voted back on the City Commission, as were school board incumbents Chris Conti and Robert Lawrence. Meanwhile, James Suhay, Bob Tera and incumbent David Underdown won the three open spots on the Baldwin Public Library board. Both of the city's Charter Amendments also …

City Commission Candidates Talk Crime, Empty Storefronts at Forum

The Oakland County League of Women Voters hosted a voters forum Wednesday night at Baldwin Public Library.

Seven of the eight candidates for the Birmingham City Commission faced off Wednesday night in a forum hosted by the Oakland County League of Women Voters at Baldwin Public Library. George Dilgard, Steve Knox, Tom McDaniel, Scott Moore, Gordon Rinschler, Vicki Walsh and Doug Weaver (candidate James Foxley was unable to attend) answered questions from league member and forum moderator Tara Moon. Knox, Walsh, Weaver and Foxley are challenging incumbents McDaniel, Dilgard, Moore and Rinschler. Scott Moore during his open forum at the league of women voters forgot to mention a couple of things. He nervously rattled off a list of accomplishments but failed to tell the public that he and the rest of the commission gave the Assistant city manager a 14% raise. City Commission, Library Board Candidates Face Off Tonight

The League of Women Voters will hold a candidate forum tonight for the eight candidates for city commission and the four candidates for library board.

Have a question for those running in the Nov. 8 election? The League of Women Voters will hold two candidate forums Wednesday night for those running for the Birmingham City Commission and Baldwin Public Library Board. All voters are invited to attend both forums, held in the basement of Baldwin Public Library at 6:30 p.m. for library board candidates and 7:15 p.m. for city commission candidates.
