State Champ Brother Rice Faces Cleveland Team During 2013 Prep Kickoff Classic

The Warriors will take on Cleveland St. Ignatius on the last day of the Detroit Sports Commission's Prep Kickoff Classic on Aug. 29 at Wayne State University.

It's not even baseball season but many are already gearing up for football with the announcement that Division 2 football champions Brother Rice will open its 2013 season during the Detroit Sports Commission's Prep Kickoff Classic. Formerly known as the Big Day Prep Showdown, the Prep Kickoff Classic will be held at Tom Adams Field at Wayne State University Aug. 29-31. The Warriors, who won the Division 2 state championship for the second time in a row last fall, will face Cleveland St. Ignatius on the last day of the Kickoff Classic, which opens the high school football season every year. The Bloomfield Hills private school — and it's legendary sports teams — say they won't go by any other name for the time being, despite recent calls for nationwide changes.

Brother Rice High School will continue the long tradition of having the 'Warriors' name and logo represent the school in athletics, despite some calls to drop the use of Native American imagery by schools across Michigan. Last week, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education, urging for a ban on such use of Native American names and imagery used by Michigan high schools. According to the Detroit Free Press, the department said that high school nicknames — such as Warriors — harms students’ education. Birmingham-Area Brother Rice Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

Seventeen student athletes from Brother Rice committed to compete at a variety of colleges and universities next fall on National Signing Day.

Seventeen senior student-athletes from Brother Rice High School formally committed to play college athletics at a variety of schools next fall during a ceremony Wednesday. The ceremony coincided with National Signing Day, during which thousands of high school athletes announce where they'll competing on a collegiate level. "It's important that we recognize these young men not just for their athletic accomplishments, but also for the great choices they've made in higher education," said Brother Rice Principal Br. Russell Cicerone scored twice for Brother Rice. Eric Dibble and Mackenzie MacEachern also had goals for the Warriors, who finished with a 25-4-1 record. Jake Corden scored for Grosse Pointe South. Brother Rice reached the finals by beating Forest Hills Eastern 5-0 on Friday. The Blue Devils finished with a record of 22-6-1. They had advanced to the title game with a victory over Port Huron Northern on Thursday.

Brother Rice to Open Football Season Against Division 1 Champ Cass Tech

Annual high school kickoff event gets a new name and venue.

DETROIT – In a battle of champions, 2011 Division 2 victor Birmingham Brother Rice will face Division 1 champion Detroit Cass Tech in the headline game of the annual high school football season kickoff event. But it won't be at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium as the Detroit Sports Commission on Tuesday announced plans to move and rebrand the event. Brother Rice's Al Fracassa clinching his seventh state football title made the list of the Top 10 Detroit Amateur Sports Moments of 2011.

Longtime Brother Rice football coach Al Fracassa's moment in the spotlight just became a little brighter. The Detroit Sports Commission recently named the football coach's seventh state title win this November as one of the Top 10 Detroit Amateur Sports Moments of 2011.
