Country Day Wins Division 3 State Tennis Title

Oakland County teams shine at state tennis finals, including Brother Rice who was runner up in Division 1 play.

Oakland County schools were well represented at the varsity boys state tennis finals over the weekend, with several Birmingham-area teams finishing well near the tops of their respective divisions. Brother Rice High School finished in the top three in Division 1 for the third straight year, winning two individual titles. But it was Detroit Country Day that might have had the most impressive team performance in any division, claiming the Division 3 championship and four individual titles, and reaching the finals in seven of the eight flights. UPDATED: Cranbrook and Country Day Join Teams Going to State Tennis Finals

Results from the varsity boys tennis regionals have familiar look to them for Oakland County area teams.

It was an incredibly busy day of tennis action in Michigan on Thursday. The varsity boys tennis regionals were held at 20 different sites across the state. Results are coming in and it looks like Oakland County will be well represented next weekend at the state finals by a lot of familiar faces. Division 1: Brother Rice, Troy In the Division 1 regional at Grosse Pointe South, Brother Rice and Troy both are headed back to the state finals. The Brother Rice Warriors dominated their regional with wins in all four singles flights and two of the four doubles flights. In the two doubles flights Brother Rice didn’t win, it still made it to the finals. Senior Charlie Dillon won No. 1 singles, Gunnar Peery won No. 2, Chase Peery won No. 3 and …

The Maples play Avondale in the game of the week while the Falcons will go for a fourth-straight win against Andover.

Are you ready for some football? Groves and Seaholm are looking to pick up some big wins on the gridiron this week, while tennis and cross country also have big matches in the lineup. Here's a look at the big games ahead: Groves The Groves High School varsity football team will head to Andover this week for a game at 7 p.m. Friday. The Falcons will try to keep the longest winning streak the school has had in seven years going against a Barons team still searching for their first win.  Groves running back Keon Collier has scored four touchdowns in each of the past two games — can he make it three in a row? Andover’s defense has struggled at times, especially with its depth, so it's definitely possible. Groves' offense has helped the team …

Highlight Reel: Tennis Heavyweights Meet To Start Season

The Brother Rice varsity boys tennis team faces two of the top teams in Division 3 to kick off the year.

The fall sports season kicks into high gear after Labor Day weekend, but there was still some great action last week. Highlights included the Groves football home opener, a perfect week for the Seaholm swim team, and some of the state’s tennis heavyweights battling it out for an early win. Various The Brother Rice varsity tennis team had a solid first week of the season, picking up a win and a tie against two of the top teams in the state. On Wednesday, the Warriors beat Detroit Country Day 6-2. They were a perfect 4-0 in doubles actions and combined wins by Gunnar Peery in No. 2 singles and Johnny Cameron in No. 4 singles were enough to pick up the win. Looking Ahead to Fall: Groves Tennis Young But Talented

The Falcons tennis squad has finished among the top 10 in the state for the past few years, a hefty legacy to live up to.

The Groves High School Falcons boys tennis team will be young, but talented this year.   “We have a lot of youth in the fold this season, however that youth is very talented, so we’re excited” said Scott Ransome, Groves' fifth-year head coach. “I can’t wait to see how this team does out on the court.” Since Ransome took over the program in 2007, the Falcons have never finished outside of the state’s top 10 at the end of the season. Last season, Groves finished eighth in the state. Blaine Stannerd is the Falcons’ No. 1 singles player, while the tandem of Calvin Greer and Alex Allen make up the squad’s top doubles team. Looking Ahead to Fall: Country Day Tennis Looking to Win It All

The Yellowjackets boys tennis team took second in the state last year. Can they make it to the top spot this year?

The Detroit Country Day boys tennis team will enter the upcoming season with the highest of aspirations. In 2010, the Yellowjackets finished second in the state. With nine returners on his 2011 squad, Yellowjackets’ head coach Tom Ellis sees good things on the horizon for the program. “We expect to be back right where we were last year, battling it out at the end for a state championship,” he said. “There are a lot of talented players coming back for us, and they know what it takes to win. I want those guys who came close to getting that state title last season to get a chance to redeem themselves.” Sven Kranz is the club’s No. 1 player, with Rishi Patel filling the No. 2 spot.
