Birmingham Sushi, What Crepe? Receive 2013 Bistro Licenses

The third applicant, Crush, will return to the Birmingham City Commission in two weeks with another request for an economic development license.

Even though there were three applicants vying for only two bistro licenses, the discussion at the Birmingham City Commission meeting Monday went relatively smoothly. On Monday night, existing restaurants Birmingham Sushi and What Crepe? easily received approval for the two 2013 Birmingham bistro licenses. Meanwhile, a third applicant, Crush, was passed over for a bistro license though most city commissioners were confident the proposed wine-themed restaurant had a better chance of approval with a different kind of liquor license. Under the city's 2007 bistro ordinance, Birmingham only approves two new bistro licenses per year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats inside …

Birmingham Bistro Applicant Looking at Different Avenues to Approval

Crush Bistro will be bringing a second set of plans with them to the Planning Board Wednesday, this one assuming they receive a different kind of liquor license.

What could become Birmingham's newest bistro may not end up being a bistro at all as the developers behind Crush Bistro look at different ways to receive city approval. On Wednesday night, Crush Bistro — one of three potential recipients of a 2013 Birmingham bistro license — will come before the Planning Board with an application for an economic development license. Crush Bistro is vying for one of two bistro licenses Birmingham offers each year. Under the city's 2007 bistro ordinance, bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats inside and 10 seats at a bar. Also in the running for a 2013 bistro license are existing restaurants, What Crepe? and Birmingham Sushi. Plans for all …

Check Out the Plans for Birmingham's Newest Bistro Hopeful, Crush Bistro

The Planning Board unanimously passed along plans from Crush Bistro, What Crepe? and Birmingham Sushi at their Wednesday night meeting. Plans will go to the City Commission in February.

The three applicants for Birmingham's 2013 bistro licenses were given the stamp of approval by the Birmingham Planning Board on Wednesday night, including the newest restaurant looking to break onto the Birmingham restaurant scene — Crush Bistro. Alongside Crush Bistro in vying for the two bistro licenses Birmingham offers each year are two familiar faces: Birmingham Sushi and What Crepe? Under Birmingham's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved by the city commission each year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats inside and 10 seats at the bar. Plans for all three applicants were passed along at an initial pre-screening by the Birmingham City …

A Wine Bar, Sushi Spot and What Crepe? Vying for 2013 Bistro Licenses

The two existing Birmingham restaurants and plans for a third will come before the Birmingham Planning Board Wednesday.

The 2013 bistro license process moves forward Wednesday night, when three applicants for two licenses come before the Birmingham Planning Board with detailed plans in hand. Two existing Birmingham eateries — Birmingham Sushi and What Crepe? — as well as plans for a new restaurant, Crush Bistro, are looking to receive the two bistro licenses Birmingham offers each year. Under Birmingham's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved by the city commission each year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats inside and 10 seats at the bar. Plans for all three restaurants came before the Birmingham City Commission in mid-October for an initial screening, during …

Birmingham should loosen up on its arbitrary limit on the number of new bistros each year. There are good and different arguments for granting all three of these licenses. The sushi place deserves a license just so it can be a full-fledged sushi joint. What Crepe has great food, but the place might not survive without a license. And Crush would add needed vitality to the 555 area. The market for …   more ›

City Commission, Planning Board Discuss Bistros, Liquor Licenses

City representatives agree that evaluating Birmingham's liquor license policy is more complicated than expected.

Where is the city moving with its liquor license policy? That was the question city commissioners and planning board members strove to answer Monday night at a joint meeting with the two boards. "We are at a critical point in our history where we have to make decisions going forward," commissioner Scott Moore said, noting that evaluating how restaurants contribute to a healthy city should be on all city leaders' minds. During the meeting, city manager Bob Bruner presented a history of the city's liquor license policies, stretching back to when Birmingham first began issuing the first 16 Class C liquor license in the 1970s. That history includes: At the last joint meeting of the planning board and city commission, members of the combined …

Commissioners 'Disappointed' Bistro Applicants Not Looking Beyond Downtown

Despite frustrations with the proposed locations, the Birmingham City Commission moved along plans for two new restaurants to the Planning Board.

Several city commissioners weren't happy about it, but the 2012 bistro license season has officially started with two of five applicants moved along in the approval process. After hearing plans from four applicants during Monday's meeting, commissioners voted to send preliminary plans for Social Kitchen and Market to the city's Planning Board — the first step in the city's new bistro approval process. Under the city's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved each year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats. Monday's prescreening was part of a new bistro approval process the city is testing for 2012 licenses, created this summer and fall after complaints…
