What's in a Name? Birmingham Bistro Hits Roadblock Over 'Bar' Moniker

One of 2012's bistro applicants, Social, changed its name at the City Commission's meeting Monday night after two commissioners said they wouldn't vote for the restaurant with "bar" in the name.

There was a moment at the Birmingham City Commission meeting Monday night when it looked like the approval of Social, an applicant for a 2012 bistro license, was in jeopardy. Ultimately, the tapas-style restaurant — which plans to open at 225 E. Maple Rd. — received a unanimous vote of approval from a panel of five commissioners (Commissioners Stuart Sherman and Scott Moore were absent), but it was only after Social's owner and operator, Chef Zack Sklar, promised one thing: to change the name. Social was one of two bistro applicants to come before the City Commission on Monday night; Market, a Mediterrean restaurant to be owned by Luxe Bar & Grille's Kristin and Joe Bongiovianni at 470 N. Old Woodward Ave., also received approval of its …

Bistro Applicant Receives Planning Board Stamp of Approval

Social Kitchen's plans include tapas-style food and rooftop dining at downtown location.

Social Kitchen, the proposed bistro at 223-225 E. Maple Road, got the opportunity to present their final site plans Wednesday. Social Kitchen is the second bistro applicant for 2012. Per Birmingham's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved each year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats. The presentation was part of a new bistro approval process the city is testing for 2012 licenses, created this summer and fall after complaints that the former process favored applicants who filed for a license first. The new process involves a prescreening by the City Commission, which then recommends up to two applicants for a full site plan review by the Planning …

Residents Express Concerns With Brewery, Restaurant Near Homes

Despite comments from neighbors, the Planning Board gave the green light to the proposed Griffin Claw Brewery. The project now goes to the City Commission.

Despite concerns from neighbors, the Planning Board gave its unanimous approval to the proposed Griffin Claw Brewing Company at its Wednesday night meeting. Member Gillian Lazar was absent. The idea of the project is not what had residents concerned — it’s the location. The brewery and restaurant is proposed for 563 and 575 S. Eton St. and will have a beer garden, tasting room and onsite brewery. Preliminary plans came before the Planning Board on Oct. 12 and brought about similar concerns and requests for a few changes, including the positioning of the dumpster and parking lot spaces, which were reflected in the revised site plans Wednesday. Among the residents who rose to voice their concerns against the project were Bill and Monika …

In Brief: Planning Board Approves Final Site Plans for Brewing Company

Market bistro and the Griffin Claw Brewing Company receive Planning Board approval; decision postponed for Social Kitchen.

Plans for two bistros and a proposed brewery highlighted Wednesday night's meeting of the Birmingham Planning Board. Market — one of 2012's two bistro proposals — as well as the proposed Griffin Claw Brewing Company were both given the nod of approval by all six present Planning Board members (Gillian Lazar was absent). Initial plans for Market, a proposed Mediterranean bistro looking to move into 474 N. Old Woodward Ave., was approved by the City Commission in a preliminary screening on Oct. 10. Market would be managed by the same managers as Luxe Bar & Grill across the street. This is the second time the Griffin Claw Brewing Company, proposed to be located at 563 S. Eton St., came before the Planning Board. The brewery's initial plans …

Commissioners 'Disappointed' Bistro Applicants Not Looking Beyond Downtown

Despite frustrations with the proposed locations, the Birmingham City Commission moved along plans for two new restaurants to the Planning Board.

Several city commissioners weren't happy about it, but the 2012 bistro license season has officially started with two of five applicants moved along in the approval process. After hearing plans from four applicants during Monday's meeting, commissioners voted to send preliminary plans for Social Kitchen and Market to the city's Planning Board — the first step in the city's new bistro approval process. Under the city's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved each year. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats. Monday's prescreening was part of a new bistro approval process the city is testing for 2012 licenses, created this summer and fall after complaints…

Quick Hits: City Commission Sends 2 Bistro Requests to Planning Board

Social Kitchen and Market will go before the Planning Board for a full site plan review in the hopes of earning one of 2012's two bistro licenses.

It was a night of new business plans and new processes at the Birmingham City Commission meeting Monday night as commissioners heard four pitches for two of the city's 2012 bistro licenses and recommended two of them for further review. After hearing plans from four applicants, commissioners voted — with some reticence — to send preliminary plans for Social Kitchen and Market to the city's Planning Board. Bistros are defined as having seasonal sidewalk seating, a full-service kitchen and no more than 65 seats. Under the city's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved each year. Monday's prescreening was part of a new bistro approval process the city is testing for the 2012 licenses, shaped this summer and fall after …
