Registration Ends Thursday for BYA's 32nd Annual Dog Show

Birmingham Youth Assistance Celebrates 50 Years

Birthday party in Shain Park to be marked with concert and appearance by dog show winner, Boomer.

Birmingham Youth Assistance (BYA) is turning 50 this year, and it is celebrating in style. The group — which is dedicated to preventing and reducing incidents of juvenile delinquency, child abuse and child neglect for those in the Birmingham school district – will be throwing a 50th birthday bash Wednesday in Shain Park, complete with music, theater and even a few VIPs. The celebrate, the BYA will be sponsoring a concert featuring Steve Acho, a Detroit-based singer and songwriter as well as Groves High School alum. Acho will be joined by various other local musicians as well as several Groves graduates. City Commission, planning board, school board to meet: The Birmingham City Commission and the Planning Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Department of Public Services for a joint planning workshop. On Tuesday, the Birmingham Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at the district's administrative offices. To Celebrate 50 Years, BYA Names Boomer Their BowWow Mascot

As the winner of the Birmingham Youth Assistance's 31st annual dog show on Feb. 12, the blind Australian Sheppard Collie mix will be the group's mascot as they celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.

Boomer, get ready for your close up. This 9-year-old rescue dog owned by Birmingham resident Nicholas Feenstra has been named the Birmingham Youth Assistance's (BYA) BowWow Mascot for 2012 and will represent the youth organization as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Boomer, an Australian Sheppard Collie mix who is blind in both eyes, was named the BYA mascot after he and his owner donated the most dog food at the 31st annual Kids Dog Show on Feb. 12. Feenstra and his family donated 120 pounds of dog food at the event, all of which was given to the Birmingham Pet Pantry — a local nonprofit that collects pet food for Gleaners. Know an Amazing Young Person? Nominate Them For BYA Awards

The Birmingham Youth Assistance will seeking nominations for their second annual Youth in Service Appreciation Awards until March 9.

Birmingham Youth Assistance (BYA) and the Birmingham Optimists Club are currently looking for nominations for the second annual Youth in Service Appreciation Awards, to be held April 18 at The Community House. The Youth in Service Appreciation Awards typically honors 40-50 teens in the Birmingham, Bingham Farms, Beverly Hills and Franklin area. Local middle school and high school students can be nominated by their principals, teachers, school counselors, community school organizers and youth clergy. To be considered, teens must either live within the Birmingham Public School district or attend a local school within the district. Both private and public school teens are eligible for nomination.
