Birmingham United Girls Lacrosse Defeats Hartland for State Title

Birmingham United pulls together in a thrilling down-to-the-wire overtime victory.

In a thrilling come-from-behind win in overtime, the Birmingham United girls lacrosse team defeated Hartland 12-11 on Saturday to claim the Division 1 state championship. It was a game filled with emotional swings. Birmingham's Kathy Quigley scored the last two goals, including one goal with only eight seconds left in overtime, according to a recap in the Detroit Free Press. Birmingham United girls last won the Division 1 lacrosse championship in 2009, according to the MHSAA. Hartland Patch contributor Aaron Skomial contributed to this report. Country Day, Birmingham United Girls Lacrosse Head to State Finals

Both teams will play Saturday in the MHSAA state finals.

Wednesday was a big night for Birmingham-area lacrosse teams. While Brother Rice proceeded to defeat their neighbors, the Birmingham United boys lacrosse team, in Division 1 play 17-6, two more Birmingham-area teams will also be heading to the state finals in lacrosse this Saturday. It was a thrilling game for the Birmingham United girls lacrosse team, which managed to beat Rockford Wednesday night by one goal. Eventually winning 12-11, the hero of the night was sophomore Jill Fischer, who scored the winning goal with less than four minutes left of play time. “I just knew I had to score for the team,” Fischer told MI Prep Zone. “We were tied and I knew we had to put ourselves up, it was just all motivation and all rush.” Birmingham United …
