The third applicant, Crush, will return to the Birmingham City Commission in two weeks with another request for an economic development license.
Even though there were three applicants vying for only two bistro licenses, the discussion at the Birmingham City Commission meeting Monday went relatively smoothly. On Monday night, existing restaurants Birmingham Sushi and What Crepe? easily received approval for the two 2013 Birmingham bistro licenses. Meanwhile, a third applicant, Crush, was passed over for a bistro license though most city commissioners were confident the proposed wine-themed restaurant had a better chance of approval with a different kind of liquor license. The two existing Birmingham restaurants and plans for a third will come before the Birmingham Planning Board Wednesday.
The 2013 bistro license process moves forward Wednesday night, when three applicants for two licenses come before the Birmingham Planning Board with detailed plans in hand. Two existing Birmingham eateries — Birmingham Sushi and What Crepe? — as well as plans for a new restaurant, Crush Bistro, are looking to receive the two bistro licenses Birmingham offers each year. Under Birmingham's 2007 bistro ordinance, only two bistro licenses are approved by the city commission each year. Birmingham Sushi Cafe, Crush and What Crepe? all made the cut Monday night.
The Birmingham City Commission on Monday approved requests for two existing restaurants and one future restaurant to move forward with their requests for bistro liquor licenses. Representatives of six restaurants — including four that are in the planning stages — had five minutes each to tell the commission why their establishment would flourish in Birmingham if granted a bistro license, which is a special liquor license granted to smaller establishments in the city. Birmingham should loosen up on its arbitrary limit on the number of new bistros each year. There are good and different arguments for granting all three of these licenses. The sushi place deserves a license just so it can be a full-fledged sushi joint. What Crepe has great food, but the place might not survive without a license.
