UPDATED: Birmingham's 'First Thursday' Shopping Event Launches Today

Several retailers will extend their hours in hopes of drawing more customers in new event hosted by the Birmingham Principal Shopping District.

  Want an early start to your weekend shopping plans? Birmingham merchants hope so as the city's Principal Shopping District launches a new 'First Thursday' program today to incentivize retailers to stay open a bit later than usual. From 6-9 p.m. tonight, patrons of some of Birmingham's most popular stores can take advantage of deals, prize giveaways and more while listening to live music and entertainment. The event will repeat on the first Thursday of each month through September with a different theme. Tonight's theme is “Spring Fling”, with live entertainment by Sinjon Smith on East Maple. Birmingham Joins Main Street Oakland County

The Birmingham Principal Shopping District is the newest associate member of Main Street Oakland County, a program that helps communities develop their downtowns.

With the hope of benefiting from expert opinions, training and more, Birmingham will soon be joining Main Street Oakland County (MSOC), the county's economic development program. Established by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson in 2000, MSOC places an emphasis on historic preservation and helps "local government develop their downtowns as vibrant, successful districts that serve as the heart of their communities." Birmingham joins 13 "Main Street Communities" and four associate-level communities at MSOC. Member communities nearby include Clawson, Ferndale, Farmington, Clarkston and Rochester.
