First Day of Birmingham Farmers Market Draws Crowd

The 11th season of the Birmingham Farmers Market kicked-off Sunday morning and didn't disappoint.

  The Birmingham Farmers Market started it's 11th season Sunday and continued to draw a large crowd of new and familiar faces to Old Woodward Avenue. More than 50 vendors of home-grown flora, locally-made foods, and a host of other products lined the municipal parking lot as students, couples and entire families made their way from tent to tent. Also new this year were tunes provided by WOMC 104.3 FM and the extended the hours until 3 p.m. this year. "We're here regularly," said Sara Gozmanian, referring to her mother Margaret Gozmanian and pet dog Moogie, all of Farmington Hills. "It's a family event, and you come out here and you're with people from the community that you know, and that's what makes it very special." That sentiment was …

Farmers Market to Stay Open a Little Later This Year

A fan of the Birmingham Farmers Market? Responding to the demand of farmers, the market will stay open until 3 p.m. in 2013.

There will be more time to grab your favorite locally-grown produce and Michigan-made products at the Birmingham Farmers Market this year. The market will be open an extra hour in 2013, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. every Sunday May through October. The extra hour was approved by the Birmingham City Commission at their Monday night meeting. Before this year, the farmers market closed at 2 p.m. According to John Heiney, executive director of the Birmingham Principal Shopping District, it was the farmers and other vendors at the market that requested the extra hour. "Some people are coming from church and they might miss the market," Heiney said, who added that the extra hour will give vendors an additional five days of selling time over the season. …

Sunday Is the Last Day for the Birmingham Farmers Market

The Birmingham Farmers Market's 2012 season wraps up Sunday with an end-of-season celebration.

It's been a good year for the Birmingham Farmers Market. Marking its 10th year in Birmingham, the Farmers Market has celebrated everything from corn to flowers, health and fitness to the fall harvest. And this Sunday, more than 70 local vendors come out for the last time this year to mark the End-of-Season Celebration. According to John Heiney, director of Birmingham's Principal Shopping District, 2012 was a year of continued growth for the Farmers Market. "We hosted an average of 2,800 visitors each week, up from 2,200 last year," Heiney said. "We want to thank our patrons, farmers and volunteers for another great year." What Will You Find at This Sunday's Harvest Festival?

You'll find everything from farm animals to sheep-shearing demonstrations during this celebration of the fall harvest.

With September comes the beginning of the fall harvests, and the Birmingham Farmers Market is celebrating that tiime of year with the 2012 Harvest Festival, taking place this Sunday. "We hold this festival in September because it celebrates everything we've worked toward the entire year: incredible bounty," said Market Master Richard "Cousin Dob" Hobson. "You won't find a more diverse selection of the area's freshest, locally-grown produce than right here in Birmingham at our Harvest Festival."
