The Birmingham Education Foundation was selected to receive $2,500 from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for its new in-school musician residency program.
Birmingham's high school musicians will be receiving a little extra help from members of the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings this spring. Last week, the Birmingham Education Foundation (BEF) received a $2,500 grant from the Oakland County Arts, Culture & Film office and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). The grant money will be used to support an in-school residency with the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings during the 2012-13 school year. "The generoous funding from MCACA, combined with an earlier Target grant, will help us establish a much-anticipated partnership with Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings," said Laura Cougar, the BEF's executive director. "By seeking outsiding funding, BEF works to support underfunded …

Organizers of last year's project creating the world's longest lemonade stand are investing $20,000 of their proceeds in a fund to promote the entrepreneurial spirit among kids at Birmingham Public Schools.
After students, teachers and parents from Beverly Elementary organized the movement that created the world's Longest Lemonade Stand (LLS) last August, project organizers are using their leftover proceeds for a good cause. LLS organizers are donating $20,000 to create a support fund with the Birmingham Education Foundation (BEF), the proceeds of which will be given back to Birmingham Public Schools to promote innovation and creativity in kids. At a total length of 1,399 feet and 11 inches, 349 colorful stands wound their way through Beverly Park last August and into the Guinness Book of World Records. However, LLS project director Patrick Liebler said the project did more than merely break a record: it inspired kids to dream big and bring …

With public dollars becoming increasingly harder to come by, a few former Birmingham parents decided to take matters in their own hand, donating a total of $32,500 in the form of endowments and support funds to the Birmingham Education Foundation (BEF) to support the aquatic programs at Seaholm and Groves. At Seaholm, Birmingham residents David and Susan Priestley began working with the BEF in 2011 to create an endowment for Seaholm's aquatics program. With two Birmingham graduates active in water sports, creating an endowment provided the Priestley's the opportunity, they said, to support the district in a way that was meaningful to them. “Our sons received great educations, and had tremendously positive experiences as varsity athletes in…
