The Leslie Science and Nature Center paid a visit to the Birmingham Covington School last week.
How many different kinds of birds of prey are there? What do they look like? And how big would an owl's eyes be if owls were as big as humans? Those were the questions Sarah Gilmore, raptor educator from the Leslie Science and Nature Center, discussed with students at the Birmingham Covington School last week. Gilmore showed students a variety of bird species while getting students involved as well. In the photo above, third grader Jonathan Cloutier shows off how big an owl's eyes would be if owls were as large as, well, him. This photo was submitted by Birmingham Public Schools. Spots at the Birmingham Covington School for the 2013-14 school year will be available next week. If there aren't enough available spots at the 3-8 school, a lottery will be held on Jan. 16.
If you have a child that wants to attend the Birmingham Covington School (BCS), they may soon get that chance in the next few weeks. Registration begins next week for the 2013-14 BCS lottery, with the district scheduled to pick the new BCS students on Jan. 16. BCS, Birmingham's combined elementary and middle school, is designed for students in grades 3-8 that are looking for a rigorous approach to science, math and interdisciplinary learning. As one of the highest-performing schools in the Birmingham Public School district, BCS was one of eight U.S. schools to be named a Microsoft Innovative School for 2012-13 and recently took home first place at Microsoft's annual Global Forum Educator Awards. BCS also made the Michigan Department of …

The Birmingham Covington School was one of three U.S. schools to be recognized at Microsoft's Global Forum Educator Awards in Prague. BCS was named a Microsoft Innovative School earlier this year.
Birmingham Public Schools is known for its top-notch teachers, curriculum and dedication to students, but now one Birmingham school is known world-wide for its innovative approach to student instruction. The Birmingham Covington School (BCS) — Birmigham's combined elementary and middle school designed for students looking for a rigorous approach to interdisciplinary learning — took home first place at Microsoft's annual Global Forum Educator Awards, held in Prague in late November. BCS and several of its teachers were awarded first place in the "Collaboration" category for their project, "Doing Business in Birmingham," during which 54 fifth- and sixth-graders went into the community to educate local business owners about sustainability and…

The Birmingham Board of Education approved Morawski's hiring at their Tuesday night meeting.
Birmingham Public Schools welcomed its newest principal Tuesday night, with the school board approving the hiring of Mark Morawski to fill the empty principal position at the Birmingham Covington School (BCS). Morawski, a Birmingham resident, comes to Birmingham Public Schools after spending nearly 20 years with the Farmington Public Schools district, most recently serving as principal at Farmington's Gill Elementary since 2006. BCS has been looking to hire a new principal after the former principal, Adam Hartley, left the district at the beginning of August, taking an assistant superintendent position with Swartz Creek Community Schools in Genesee County. Hartley led BCS — which is designed for students looking for a rigorous approach to …

The Birmingham Covington School (BCS) may soon have a new principal. According to a note sent home to parents Friday, Mark Morawski, principal of Farmington's Gill Elementary, accepted the position of principal at BCS, Birmingham Public Schools' combined elementary and middle school. A final decision is dependent on approval from the Birmingham Board of Education at their Dec. 4 meeting. Principals from Lake Orion and Farmington have been named finalists in the search for the next principal at the Birmingham Covington School.
And then there were two. Two candidates have been named finalists in the search for the Birmingham Covington School's (BCS) next principal, and parents are invited this week to meet those candidates and share what they're looking for in BCS's next leader. John Bernia, principal at Lake Orion's Oakview Middle School, and Mark Morawski, principal at Farmington's Gill Elementary School, were named finalists Monday, according to a note from Birmingham Public Schools. BCS is looking to hire a new principal after the former principal, Adam Hartley, left the district at the beginning of August, taking an assistant superintendent position with Swartz Creek Community Schools in Genessee County. Beginning Aug. 18, Birmingham Covington School's Assistant Principal Patricia Chinn will serve as interim principal for the remainder of 2012.
Birmingham Covington School (BCS) Principal Adam Hartley will be leaving Birmingham Public Schools this fall, and a new permanent principal might not be in place until 2013. Hartley has led BCS — Birmingham's combined elementary and middle school designed for students looking for a rigorous approach to science and interdisciplinary learning — for the past three years. According to a note sent to parents late Tuesday night, Hartley is taking an assistant superintendent position with Swartz Creek Community Schools, part of the Genesee Intermediate School District. "While I am excited to be named the new Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in the Swartz Creek School District, I do leave BCS with a heavy heart," Hartley …

Fifth graders shine at Birmingham Covington School on math, reading and science test.
Despite a dip in scores across the board, Birmingham students continue to exceed statewide MEAP averages, according to the fall 2011 test results released today. During the MEAP exam, taken during fall 2011, students in grades 3-9 were tested in math, reading, writing, social studies and/or science, depending on the grade level. Top of mind concerning this year's MEAP results was the changing cut scores implemented by the state last spring. These cut scores represented career- and college-ready achievement standards and define the cut-off point for the various levels of proficiency on MEAP test: advanced, proficient, partially proficient and not proficient. At the elementary level, all students in grades 3-5 were tested in math and reading…
