Planning Board Says Yes to Crush's Request for Economic Development License

After first going for bistro license, the proposed restaurant looking to move in on South Old Woodward, Crush, is now aiming for approval with a different kind of liquor license.

So, maybe Birmingham's newest bistro hopeful, Crush, won't be a bistro after all. Last week, the Birmingham Planning Board recommended that Crush — the wine-themed restaurant looking to move into 555 S. Old Woodward Ave. — receive an economic development license, a form of liquor license for businesses that revive the Woodward Avenue corridor. However, this is the second set of recommendations for Crush and it will be up to the Birmingham City Commission to decide: should Crush receive an economic development license, a bistro license or nothing at all? For Crush, the politics comes down to picking the right kind of license that will win them approval. Before it went looking for an economic development license — a cheaper form of a Class C…

236 seats?!?!?....Welcome, South II. Hopefully, the City Commission will not forget their last foolish foray into the "large" restaurant business.   more ›

Social Kitchen to Extend Outdoor Dining Season With New Curtains

One city commissioner, however, is upset that the move conflicts with Birmingham's 2007 bistro ordinance.

Birmingham's bistro ordinance was back under the microscope Monday night, as city commissioners struggled with a request to temporarily enclose the outdoor dining space at the newly-opened Social Kitchen and Bar. In the end, commissioners approved a plan to install Isinglass curtains — similar to those used at Cafe Via — around Social Kitchen's outdooor dining area off Maple Road. However, the decision didn't come without a fight, with one commissioner voicing concerns over whether extending the outdoor dining season defeats the original intent of the city's 2007 bistro ordinance. The curtains only came before the commission after a hiccup with the Planning Department revealed the curtains weren't part of Social Kitchen's original plans. …

Papa Joe's to Officially Partner With Tallulah Owner on Bistro Project

On Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission approved a request to assign the rights of Papa Joe's bistro license to Tallulah owner Mindy Lopus.

After months of planning and now three separate requests to the Birmingham City Commission, Papa Joe's Gourmet Market can now move forward on new plans for a second-floor bistro. On Monday night, the City Commission voted 5-2 to assign the rights under Papa Joe's bistro license to Addie & Jacks, LLC, an entity owned by Tallulah and Bella Piatti owner Mindy Lopus. Papa Joe's owner Tony Curtis received a bistro license in 2007 in the hopes of opening Bistro Joe's, an eatery on the grocery store's second-floor mezzanine level. Under the new deal, Lopus will operate the bistro as an equal partner, leaving Curtis to handle grocery operations. This is the third time the issue has come before the City Commission, though it's the first time it's …

Commissioners Vote Down New Co-Owner for Papa Joe's Bistro

Citing concerns over side-stepping Birmingham's established bistro-approval process, Birmingham city commissioners voted down a request to add Addie & Jack's, LLC to the Papa Joe's bistro license.

Papa Joe's Gourmet Market and their proposed plans for a second-floor bistro may have to go back to the drawing board. On Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission voted down a request to add Addie & Jack's, LLC as a co-licensee on Papa Joe's bistro license and Class C liquor license, citing concerns with how plans fit with the city's bistro ordinance. Papa Joe's received a bistro license in 2007 to open Bistro Joe's on its second-floor mezzanine level. At the city commission's July 9 meeting, however, Papa Joe's owner Tony Curtis said he wanted to bring in Mindy Lopus — co-owner of Tallulah Wine Bar and Bella Piatti — to operate the bistro under a new menu and new name, Addie & Jacks. By becoming a co-licensee, Lopus would be an equal …

I was in the process of putting together a concept and working with investors on a bistro license. It was a dream of mine to own my own Restaurant. I think its a shame that someone would just waste away an opportunity. My only problem was finding a space that would fit into my budget. I'm a huge fan of Papa Joe's and work has a restaurant Consultant and event planner. I think they should of just …   more ›

City Commission Postpones Decision on New Bistro Concept for Papa Joe's

City commissioners were wary of breaking with the intent of Birmingham's bistro ordinance as they reviewed new bistro plans from Birmingham restauranteur Mindy Lopus.

A new bistro is looking to open on the second floor of Papa Joe's Gourmet Market, but the Birmingham City Commission needs a little bit more time to think about the plans and what it means for Birmingham's bistro ordinance. Papa Joe's Gourmet Market came to the city commission Monday night asking that Addie & Jack's LLC — a new restaurant concept created by Tallulah and Bella Piatti owner Mindy Lopus — be assigned as a co-licensee on Papa Joe's bistro license and Class C liquor license. Papa Joe's received a bistro license in 2007 to open Bistro Joe's on its second-floor mezzanine level. However on Monday night, Papa Joe's owner Tony Curtis said he wanted Lopus to run the bistro operations, given her experience in Birmingham's restaurant …
