Save the Date for the Third Annual Birmingham Bike Festival

This year, the Birmingham-based bike festival will host the Michigan State Criterium Championship.

There still may be snow on the ground but many in Birmingham are already thinking summer, as the Birmingham Bike Festival gears up for its third year. The one-day festival featuring dozens of bike races for all ages and skill levels is set for Aug. 25 this year in downtown Birmingham. In addition, this is a big year for the festival as it prepares to host the 2013 and 2014 Michigan State Criterium Championship for men. "Not only does being awarded host (of the Criterium) speak to the level of professionalism our event has achieved with the first two festivals, but it's going to attract a lot of riders," said Jeffrey Surnow, a Birmingham businessman and the festival's founder and director. The Michigan State Criterium Championship is a one-…

"Breathe some fresh air, enjoy the city, and spend less time in the car and more time outside." This year's festival was special for a lot of reasons, the biggest being Miles4Miles, the parade-style ride that raised …

This was a nice event to complement the art fairs, concerts, and days-on-the-town retail events in Birmingham. The bike races provide a unique thrill for spectators to be so close to the action. You witness the speed, sounds, and strategy that don’t come across when you watch a race on TV. Thanks go to Mr. Surnow, the sponsors, and the City for making it happen.   more ›

Who Was the Inspiration for Miles4Miles?

The parade-style race during this weekend's Birmingham Bike Festival benefits the Miles Levin Miracle Fund at Beaumont Children’s Hospital.

You can walk a mile in someone's shoes, or you can ride a half-mile to raise funds for kids in Nepal and Metro Detroit. This weekend, as part of the second-annual Birmingham Bike Festival, Birmingham will be host to Miles4Miles, a parade-style family biking event benefiting the 2012 Miles Levin Miracle Fund at Beaumont Children's Hospital and the Miles Levin Nepal Foundation for Health and Education. But just who was Miles Levin and why was he such an inspiration? According to Beaumont surgical oncologist Richard Keidan, Levin was a Cranbrook student who passed away from a rare form of cancer shortly after graduating in 2007. Levin was a few days short of his 19th birthday. "Miles was an inspiration to me in his fight against cancer," said…

Also at the Monday night meeting, Birmingham officials approved requests for the second annual Birmingham Bike Festival.

With the election of commissioner Mark Nickita as Birmingham's newest mayor, and commissioner George Dilgard as its newest mayor pro tem, Monday night's meeting of the Birmingham City Commission was a busy one. Here's a rundown of what also happened at the Monday night meeting: Commissioners voted Monday to remove the historic designation from the Stewart House at 505 Townsend St. According to a presentation by city planner Shelia Bashiri, the current owner of the home — Donald Klein — has made several attempts to improve the house in recent years but was rejected by the state when he applied for tax incentives. Bashiri said due to additions and renovations to the home in the late 1980s, the state determined the home wasn't historic. …
