Need a little mystery or suspense to get you through the week? The Baldwin Public Library has just what you need with the latest batch of new arrivals. This week's Library Picks are: Dangerous Refuge by Elizabeth Lowell: On the surface Shaye Townsend has little in common with Tanner. He's a hard-edged big city cop come home to the historic Davis family ranch to settle his uncle's estate. She's working for an environmental conservancy that acquires and protects old ranches—and she wants to preserve the Davis homestead. When the suspicious death of Tanner's uncle at his ranch throws the two opposites together, tempers flare and sparks fly. While they have trouble seeing eye to eye, Shaye and Tanner agree on one thing: They need to uncover…

The Library Board will start looking for ways to advocate for House Bills 4104 and 4105, which would ban concealed and openly-carried guns in Michigan libraries.
Baldwin Public Library isn't backing down in its attempt to lobby Michigan lawmakers to ban guns in Michigan's public libraries. Last week, the Library Board made plans to aggressively court lawmakers in the State House and Senate in an attempt to have libraries included on the list of public places where firearms are not allowed. "We can't let the issue die," Library Board Member James Suhay said at Monday's board meeting. "We have to keep pushing." The effort isn't Baldwin's first. The Library Board drafted its first letter to then-State Rep. Chuck Moss and State Sen. John Pappageorge (R-Troy) in July after a group of open carry advocates — in Birmingham at the time protesting the arrest of Troy teenager Sean Combs — entered the …

Library officials can now start looking for an architect to create conceptual drawings of what the Baldwin Public Library of the future will look like.
Are you excited about a renovated Baldwin Public Library? Well, you have a little more time to wait but on Monday, the library received the green light to move on to the next step of their renovation plans. Earlier this week, the Birmingham City Commission approved the library's "Building Program," a document that outlines what Baldwin Public Library will hopefully look like in a few years, as well as how it will be used. Commissioners also gave Baldwin the go ahead to look for an architect to create conceptual drawings and determine cost estimates for the renovation project. "In the saga of the library building, we've come a long way," Baldwin Director Doug Koschik said, "and we have a long way to go." Koschik said Monday that if …

By eliminating the "hot picks" section, Birmingham library patrons won't have to pay to check out new books and movies.
Patrons of Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library won't have to worry about shelling out so much money if they forget to return a book or want to check out a newly-arrived DVD. In late January, the Baldwin Library Board voted to reduce late fees as well as eliminate the fee for checking out "Hot Picks," the section dedicated to newly-released DVDs and books. The maximum number of times items can be renewed has also been upped to four, provided no one has a hold on them. Now, late fees have been reduced to 20 cents a day for nearly all items — including books, DVDs, interlibrary loans and toys. DVDs and video games, meanwhile, have a daily overdue fine of $1 a day. In addition, the library's maximum fines have been reduced to $10 for all items…

A Building Program, crafted by a joint committee of library board members and city commissioners in December, details plans to expand Birmingham's library by 9,000 square feet.
Plans for Baldwin Public Library's eventual renovation continue to move forward, as city leaders look to the public to help answer questions about what Birmingham's library should look like and how it will be used in the future. Residents and users of Baldwin are invited to attend a community forum on the library's future, to be held at the library at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23. In addition, a Request for Proposal (RFP) draft — which will solicit an architect to create conceptual drawings and determine cost estimates for the renovation project — is scheduled to be presented to the Birmingham City Commission in late February. This RFP will be based on a new Building Program, a report approved by a joint committee of library board members and city …
