A Building Program, crafted by a joint committee of library board members and city commissioners in December, details plans to expand Birmingham's library by 9,000 square feet.
Plans for Baldwin Public Library's eventual renovation continue to move forward, as city leaders look to the public to help answer questions about what Birmingham's library should look like and how it will be used in the future. Residents and users of Baldwin are invited to attend a community forum on the library's future, to be held at the library at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23. In addition, a Request for Proposal (RFP) draft — which will solicit an architect to create conceptual drawings and determine cost estimates for the renovation project — is scheduled to be presented to the Birmingham City Commission in late February. This RFP will be based on a new Building Program, a report approved by a joint committee of library board members and city …

In addition, survey respondents said they would be willing to pay more in taxes for a renovated or expanded library, though they want to see plans first.
When it comes to renovating Baldwin Public Library, the surveys say Birmingham residents are willing to pay a little more to renovate the library, but they want to see a complete plan first. In late October, the city heard the preliminary results from various surveys conducted throughout 2012 on the state of Baldwin Public Library and the renovations or projects residents would like to see happen first. According to plans presented at the city's long-term planning session in January, Baldwin is looking to either expand the library's footprint by 42 percent or renovate the entire building. The last comprehensive renovation of Baldwin happened 30 years ago and estimated costs for another renovation could range between $3 million and $10 …

Baldwin Public Library is asking community members to fill out an online survey about the library's proposed renovation plans.
Baldwin Public Library is looking for community feedback on proposed renovation plans for the library building. Baldwin is looking at several options for expanding or renovating the library building located downtown near Shain Park and The Community House. According to plans presented at the city's long-term planning session in January, the library is looking to either expand the building's footprint by 42 percent or renovate the entire building. The last comprehensive renovation of Baldwin happened 30 years ago and estimated costs range from $3 million to $10 million. Since that presentation to the Birmingham City Commission, Library Director Doug Koschik has worked with the city to form a joint committee charged with investigating …

The Library Board is considering two plans that would completely rethink the library's footprint.
What kind of renovations are on the way for the Baldwin Public Library building? Library administrators presented two possible plans for renovating the library during the Birmingham City Commission's long-range planning session Saturday, and though the plans are far from fruition, the feedback from city leaders was positive. "I like how this is going, this is good," said Commissioner Stuart Sherman, who directed library administrators and the Baldwin Library Board to, among other things, solicit community feedback as they decide how to move forward. Library Director Doug Koschik noted that Saturday was a "starting point for conversation about the library building," and so far, there are two tentative plans on the table for Baldwin: one, a …

As a Sr. citizen, and long time resident of Birmingham, who also loves her library, and uses it quite regularly, I believe we need to look at the long term use of the library, at "rethinking" the spaces that we currently occupy, and possibly come up with a solution that doesn't involve adding to the footprint of the building. There are a lot of residents of Birmingham, who are "underwater" with …   more ›
