Registration at all Birmingham Public Schools and surrounding private schools began this week. Here's what you need to know.
The countdown continues for Birmingham Public Schools students as they prepare to head back to the classroom. The first step: registration for the 2012-13 school year. School officials ask that parents arrive at registration with all the appropriate forms filled out, including: emergency information forms, technology acceptable-use forms, health care plans and permission to administer medicine. All forms, including forms for new students, can be found on the district's website. At registration, parents can also pick up their back-to-school packets, find out which class their child is in and meet the teachers and staff. School starts for Birmingham students in less than a month, which means one thing: back to school shopping. According to the National Retailers Foundation, families of K-12 students will spend an average of $688 on supplies this year, with 85 percent saying the struggling economy continues to dictate how they shop. So, with a lot of cash to be spent, here's our top five tips for shopping smart this fall while getting your kids everything they need for hitting the books. Whether your child is in first grade and going to school all day for the first time, or a high school freshman about to walk the halls of Groves High School, the first day of school for students new to a building can be tough. Football teams across Michigan, including those from Seaholm and Groves, began practice this week while getting used to several new rules from the MHSAA.
The 2012-13 fall sports season officially began this week, when approximately 110,000 student-athletes in Michigan begin practice in eight sports regulated by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Practicce began for Michgan's football players on Monday, followed by all other fall sports — from cross country to boys tennis — on Wednesday. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game. For the Seaholm High School Maples, the varsity team plays their first game of the season at home Aug. 23 against Ferndale High School. Huntington Backpack Index says parents will pay as much as 6 percent more for supplies for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade this year.
Back-to-school costs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade are expected to increase by as much as 6 percent this year, according to the 2012 Huntington Backpack Index released Wednesday by Huntington Bank. The annual survey cited small hikes in the cost of common supplies, as well as significant instrument rental fee increases, as factors in the added burden on family budgets. The findings include the following: The index is based on school supply lists collected in the six states where Huntington Bank operates — Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky — and the cost of those supplies at major online retailers such as Staples and OfficeMax.
