What's Happening in Birmingham In May?

Spring truly arrives in Birmingham in May with a slew of outdoor activities and celebrations ranging from Art Birmingham to the Village Fair. Ready to get busy?

  May is upon us and Birmingham is about to get very busy with outdoor, family-friendly events ranging from the Village Fair to the Celebrate Birmingham parade. "May is a big month in Birmingham, no doubt about it, and there's a lot to look forward to," said City Manager Bob Bruner. Patch will keep you up to date with what's going on every week, but here's a look ahead at the entire month. The thing is, we know we've missed some events — some of which haven't been announced yet — so leave us a comment and let us know what else is happening.

Photos: Art Birmingham Enjoys Busy Weekend in Shain Park

The annual art fair features more than 175 artists this year in and around Shain Park.

More than 175 artists from Michigan and around the country have gathered in Birmingham this weekend for the 31st annual Art Birmingham. Sponsored by the Guild of Artists and Artisans and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, Art Birmingham will be open through 5 p.m. Sunday in and around Shain Park. Need To Know: Art Birmingham to Set Up Shop In Shain Park

Celebrating its 31st year, Art Birmingham will invade the streets around Shain Park this Saturday and Sunday.

One of Birmingham's two annual art shows comes to town this Memorial Day weekend: the 31st annual Art Birmingham, sponsored by the Guild of Artists and Artisans and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. After having to shut down early last year due to heavy rains, Art Birmingham will be returning to its central spot in and around Shain Park this year, with more than 175 local and national artists participating in the two-day fair. Quick Hits: City Moves Toward Changing Bistro Review Process

The Birmingham City Commission also authorized a planning and consulting firm to prepare a Complete Streets study on East Maple Road.

It was a busy night at the Birmingham City Commission meeting, with commissioners discussing potential changes to the bistro review process as well as authorizing Parson Brinckerhoff and LSL Planning to conduct a Complete Streets study for East Maple Road. Here's a rundown of what happened during Monday's meeting: Commissioners voted to amend the city's bistro ordinance, allowing the City Commision to establish deadline and review guidelines for those looking to apply for one of the two bistro licenses the city issues each year.
