Roeper's Ernie Righetti Named MIAAA Regional Athletic Director of the Year

Ernie Righetti, the man "who never quits," has bee the Roeper School's athletic director for 31 years.

Roeper Athletic Director Ernie Righetti is enjoying some well-deserved time in the spotlight after he was named the MIAAA Regional Athletic Director of the Year earlier this month. The Roeper School, specifically the Birmingham-based Roeper Upper School, competes in the MIAAA, or the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administration, which is made up of more than 500 schools across the state. Righetti, a Beverly Hills resident who has served as Roeper's athletic director for 31 years, received the award at the MIAAA's annual mid-winter conference in Traverse City on March 18. Detroit Country Day Boys Basketball Team Heading to the Semifinals

The Yellowjackets beat Flint Powers 79-61 Tuesday night during the Class B quarterfinals.

Book your ticket for the Breslin Center, boys, because you're going to the semifinals.  The Detroit Country Day boys basketball team is once again heading to the state semifinals this weekend after defeating Flint Powers 79-61 Tuesday night during the Class B quarterfinal matchup in Imlay City.  According to MIPrepZone.com, the Yellowjackets dominated the court on Tuesday night, scoring again and again off of turnovers.  "It's something that we really emphasized this year," senior Austin Price told MIPrepZone. Country Day Boys Basketball Team Wins a Spot in the Quarterfinals

Meanwhile, the girls from Detroit Country Day bow out of the tournament with a loss to Flint Powers on Tuesday.

The boys basketball team from Detroit Country Day are moving on after a big win over Detroit Douglass in the regional final Wednesday night. Country Day beat Douglass 73-51 Wednesday in the final round of the MHSAA regional tournament. "This is a fun group,” Country Day head coach Kurt Keener told MIPrepZone. “It’s invigorating as a coach because we’re playing a little more small ball. We’ve got three letters, F, T, C, and they stand for focus, toughness and chemistry. And I think that defines this team perfectly. According to MLive, Country Day lead in scoring the entire night, with junior Edmond Sumner leading the Yellowjackets with 22 points. Seaholm Boys Swimmers Finish Third at State Finals

This is the second year in a row Seaholm has finished third at the state swimming finals, their third year coming in the top three. Groves, meanwhile, finished ninth on Saturday.

The boys swimmers at Birmingham's Seaholm High School are used to being at the top, and this weekend was no different, with the Maples coming in third place at the MHSAA Division 2 state swimming finals. Seaholm finished behind Holland and Ann Arbor Huron at the state finals at Oakland University on Saturday, bringing home a total of 223.5 points. Ranked No. 1 in the state going into the finals, the Maples were hoping to snag two state championships in three years. "I thought we did really well, yesterday and today," Seaholm head coach Tom Wylie told MIPrepZone on Saturday. "We had several lifetime best times today and today we broke a couple of varsity records, including one that's been around since 1999, so I was very pleased with our …

Cranbrook Wins State Hockey Championship

Cranes defeat Sault Ste. Marie 4-2 in Division 3 final on Saturday.

Cranbrook rules again. The Cranes claimed the Division 3 hockey state championship with a 4-2 victory over Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday at the Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth. Alex Alger scored two goals, and Austin Alger scored another goal for the Cranes, who claimed a state title for the 16th time, according to MI Prep Zone. Kevin Shand also scored for Cranbrook, which finished with a 28-2-1 overall record. Spencer Applebaum recorded the win in goal. Cranbrook last won a state hockey championship in 2010.

Groves, Country Day, Roeper Advance in Basketball Tournament

Meanwhile, Groves' narrow win over Southfield Friday night scored the Falcons their first district title since 2005.

Four Birmingham teams will be advancing to the next stage in the MHSAA basketball tournament next week after scoring big wins Thursday and Friday nights. First up will be the boys. Teams from Groves High School, the Roeper Upper School and Detroit Country Day won their district final games Friday, meaning they'll move on to the regional round starting Monday. According to MIPrepZone.com: For Groves, this is their first district title since 2005, MIPrepZone reports. Meanwhile, the girls basketball squad from Detroit Country Day are heading to their third Class B quarterfinals appearance in as many years, after beating Ferndale handily in the regional finals Thursday, 59-37.
