Readers' Choice: Chop Shop Named Favorite Spot for Grilling Supplies

Memorial Day is coming up, and Chop Shop Kitchens was voted the best place to buy grilling supplies in this week's Readers' Choice poll.

The votes are in but when it comes to picking up supplies for your Memorial Day barbecue in Birmingham, Patch readers are clear: Chop Shop Kitchens is your favorite place to pick up hotdogs, hamburgers and potato salad. Patch readers had a variety of grocery stores and markets to choose from in Readers' Choice: What's the Best Spot for Memorial Day Grilling Supplies?, from the Birmingham Farmers Market to Kroger. But with 89 percent of the vote, it was Birmingham's Chop Shop Kitchens, located at 2221 Cole St., that won out. Teens Busted for Car Break-Ins, Spraying People With Super Soakers

The following is a roundup of recent Birmingham Police reports: Two 17-year-old boys from Birmingham were arrested early Sunday morning for breaking into several cars on the 300 block of Fairfax. According to police reports, a resident on that block watched a young man enter his vehicle around 1:25 a.m. Sunday. The man appeared to remove items while another young man waited near the sidewalk, the resident reported. The resident then watched the first young man go across the street and enter another vehicle. The responding officers apprehended both boys while one was in the process of taking items from a vehicle. Both were taken into custody and charged with larceny from auto, then turned over to their parents with a court appearance date. …

Breaking Down the Numbers: School Board Considers $6 Million Deficit for 2012-13

To make up for the deficit, school board members are deciding whether to dip into the district's rainy day fund or take cash from the major project fund. The board will vote on the budget on June 5.

Though the search for Birmingham Public Schools’ next superintendent has been top of mind for the members of the Birmingham Board of Education lately, approval of the district’s 2012-13 budget isn’t far away. Members of the public will be able to comment on the budget beginning at 7 p.m. June 5 at the district’s administrative offices. At that meeting, school board trustees also plan to adopt the budget, as well as authorize any operating and debt retirement millages for the upcoming years. Here’s what you need to know going forward: The school board must complete a budget by June 30, the end of its fiscal year. More than 125 seniors from the Seaholm class of 2012 received departmental, community and school awards Thursday night.

More than 125 seniors from Seaholm High School were honored Thursday night at the school's annual awards assembly. "As parents, I'm sure it felt like just a few moments ago, you dropped your child off for kindergarten, and waited anxiously for them to come home and tell you how their first day of school went," Principal Dee Lancaster said.
