Led by Father Robert Lee Hart, the St. James Episcopal Church has been serving the Birmingham community since 1893, when it had its first service in what was then the Birmingham Library. The church grew with the city, and eventually moved into its current location on Maple Road.

Now more than 100 years old, both the interior and exterior of the building have been renovated, and the roof has been adorned with a 35-bell carillon. The church offers youth programs for students pre-K through the 12th grade, vacation Bible school, and adult education classes. Singers of all ages can join a variety of choir groups, as well as a hand bell choir, the St. James Ringers. The church also offers parishioners the chance to participate in various outreach programs, as well as other social clubs.
