Cultural Arts Award Banquet and CRUSH Birmingham Returns

Birmingham Bloomfield Cultural Arts Award

A community coalition comprised of The Community House, The Birmingham Bloomfield Cultural Council, the Birmingham Eccentric and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center will honor local photographer Laurie Tennent with the 2013  Birmingham Bloomfield Cultural Arts Award at a special banquet at 6 p.m. at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. Tennent, known for her professional achievements as a renowned art and commercial photographer, as well as her work with several community organizations, will be presented with an award designed by Link Wachler and her name will be permanently inscribed on a plaque at the Birmingham City Hall.

Gardening Tips

Join gardening expert and author Janet Macunovich to learn about how to reap                   four seasons of interest from your home landscaping features from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Baldwin Public Library. Learn design techniques, which plants to use that will fill seasonal gaps and maintenance tips during this special free event.

Roeper's Diversity Amnesty Film Series

The Roeper School's annual film series features "Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football" at 7:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Campus, located at 1051 Oakland Ave. in Birmingham. The film follows Dearborn Fordson's predominantly Arab-American high school football team as if prepares for a rivalry game during the holy month of Ramadan, and reveals a community that embraces its Islamic faith and the American Dream while struggling for acceptance in post-9/11 America. 

CRUSH Birmingham

The Sixth Annual CRUSH Birmingham Wine and Food Classic returns to the Townsend Hotel at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, with all proceeds benefiting the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. Described by organizers as the year’s most anticipated wine pairing event in metro Detroit, CRUSH Birmingham features renowned chefs, wine personalities and Master Sommeliers from across the country that will provide wine and food pairing expertise. This year's highlights include Anna Abbona, a sommelier from Barolo, Italy. An after-hours event will follow. Tickets are available at www.crushmichigan.com.

OCBA’s Race Judicata 2013 

Runners can choose from 5K and 10K distances, while walkers can stroll and enjoy the 5K course beginning at Covington Middle School in Bloomfield Township at 9:15 a.m. The event, organized by the Oakland County Bar Association for the 34th year, will benefit the Oakland County Bar Foundation. Registration opens at 8 a.m. on race day.
