Elections, Uptown Film Festival in Birmingham This Week

Cast a ballot and gear up for a weekend of films and football featuring Birmingham area teams.


Election Day

Four candidates will vie for three open seats on the Birmingham City Commission, and three spots on the Baldwin Public Library Board will also be decided in Tuesday's general election. Polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

62nd Annual Jewish Book Fair

The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit in West Bloomfield will host its 62nd Annual Jewish Book Fair from Nov. 6-17featuring leading figures from the arts, entertainment, politics, business, journalism and much more. Click here for an entire schedule.


City Meetings

The Birmingham Historical Museum Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Historical Museum. Agenda items include the proposed Greenwood Cemetery Advisory Committee, and Bell Project fund-raising.

The Birmingham Principal Shopping District Board will meet at 8 a.m. Nov. 7 at The Community House. Among the agenda items is an agreement with Top Hats and Tails for holiday carriage rides, and presentations of several committee reports. 

Uptown Film Festival

The Uptown Film Festival will return to Birmingham Nov. 7-9. Now in its third year, the three-day festival features the annual Michigan Film Awards on Saturday night. Organizers chose more than 30 films from roughly 100 submissions by movie-makers around the globe, including many Michigan natives such as Jalen Rose, Jessica Golden and Amy Weber. Playoff Football

Seaholm High School's varsity football team (9-1) will try to extend its stellar season by derailing Brother Rice High School's march toward a third-consecutive Division 2 title Friday at 7 p.m. The Maples, coming off a huge 17-16 comeback win over Southfield last Friday at Maple Field, will visit the unbeaten Warriors (10-0) at Hurley Field in Berkley. Brother Rice soundly defeated Seaholm's chief rival Groves 45-0 last Friday.
